We made our own choices, visited the area anonymously, and paid our bills in full.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is a visit to the Arab Baths worth it?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, this remarkably well-preserved former spa complex is well worth a visit.\nStrolling through these remains is a way of stimulating your imagination and understanding Ronda&#8217;s rich history.\nThe baths had a dual function as religious rituals on the one hand, and as relays of social life on the other.\nWhat&#8217;s more, they were often the first stop for travellers arriving in town, acting as a veritable gateway to Ronda.<br\/>In our opinion, this is one of <a href=\"https:\/\/andalucialovers.com\/en\/best-things-to-do-ronda-attractions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ronda&#8217;s must-see attractions<\/a>.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you can see<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The preserved architecture of the thermal baths<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Built at the end of the 13th century, this Muslim-era spa is the best-preserved in the Iberian Peninsula!\nThe Arab hammam is an adaptation of the Roman thermal baths, which were based on steam baths, unlike the Romans, who bathed in water.\nWe were particularly impressed by the beauty of the main hall.<br\/>The hall is divided into three distinct spaces, separated by graceful horseshoe arches.<br\/>These arches, four in number, rest on elegant columns made from a harmonious blend of brick and stone.\nThe whole supports hemispherical barrel vaults studded with skylights.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" the documentary video to immerse yourself in the history of the thermal baths.\nThis will enable you to understand the function of the rooms as you wander around.\nIn fact, the video helps you understand the water collection and distribution system.\nFor example, as the baths were steam baths, they heated air rather than water.\nHeat circulated under the floor (via the hypocaust system) to the warm and temperate rooms.\nTo create steam, water was then poured onto the hot floor of these rooms.     <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" of light provided by the star-shaped skylights on the vaults<strong>.<\/strong> We learned that they were once used as ventilation grilles.\nDid you know that geometric patterns were very common in the architecture of Muslim Andalucia (8th-15th centuries)?\nThey lend a structured harmony to buildings while symbolizing the infinite nature of creation, thus celebrating the divine figure in an the baths themselves.\nThe starting point of the toilet process, the reception room was composed of latrines (toilets) and changing rooms, organized around a fountain.\nThis room would have been covered by a large dome supported by cruciform pillars and low arches, so the current vision of arcades is biased.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Andalucia\/14d-Ronda-arab-baths\/i-dFKz4FJ\/2\/MFK5Hbsn9jngzn6QWmD5RC5PXhtQpc6sJ8Bs7XszJ\/L\/Arab_Baths_Ronda_Andalucia_Spain-7743-L.jpg\" alt=\"Architecture of the Arab Baths in Ronda, Spain\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The different rooms<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What&#8217;s most impressive is to walk through the various rooms and imagine the serene yet lively atmosphere of a hammam in those days.\nWe discovered: the cold room, the temperate and hot rooms, the hypocaust (Roman heating system) and the back of the building where the water was heated. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Andalucia\/14d-Ronda-arab-baths\/i-vTwFCzJ\/2\/Kz2nksNX6Tn89W6pPjKVVDgLFnCdJfW64LNDrmHsK\/L\/Arab_Baths_Ronda_Andalucia_Spain-7759-L.jpg\" alt=\"The remains of the Arab Baths in Ronda, Spain\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The well<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To facilitate access to water, a water wheel was built at the point closest to the confluence of the Culebras stream and the Guadalev\u00edn river.\nLocated at the top of a tower, the wheel was powered by a roped donkey, which, as it walked, activated a mechanism.\nThis carried the river water to the aqueduct canal, which in turn supplied the thermal baths.\nToday, only the deep well is visible!   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Andalucia\/14d-Ronda-arab-baths\/i-RXTHdWB\/2\/MqtPCTwTmWN2RSXpchpjKhS8T5Mqrjfdpd2h39fsn\/L\/Arab_Baths_Ronda_Andalucia_Spain-7768-L.jpg\" alt=\"Overview of the well at the Arab Baths in Ronda, Spain\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mediation panels<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take the time to read the mediation panels along the way.\nCarved out of wood, they blend into the space and help you understand how the thermal baths functioned.\nWe learned, for example, about the existence of craft workshops, including a pottery and a tannery.\nExcavations revealed clay settling basins.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" of the Arab Baths in Ronda, Spain\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The view of Puente Viejo<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the site, you&#8217;ll have a beautiful, low-angle view of the Puente Viejo.\nAlthough it is far less famous than the Puente Nuevo, the emblem of the town of Ronda, it does have its own historical significance.\nProbably built in Roman times, it was rebuilt during the Muslim period.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" probably built on the site of a former mosque.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where the old thermal baths are located<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the town of Ronda<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the San Miguel district<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p possible to reach the site by car, but we do not recommend this option as the roads are very narrow and public parking spaces are scarce.<br\/>The nearest parking lot is the Parking Ronda on the southern edge of town, an 8-minute walk from the thermal baths.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Public transport access<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s no public transport access to the Ronda Arab baths.\nIf you can, we advise you to go on foot.\nFrom the Plaza de Toros, it&#8217;s a 10-15 minute walk downhill.\nIt&#8217;s a very pleasant stroll through this well-preserved old quarter.   <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting difficulties<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several steps down to access the site, and the floors are uneven.<br\/>We didn&#8217;t notice any special facilities for PRMs.<br\/>Please also note that the video presentation of the site is only available in English and Spanish.<\/p>\n\n<figure prices<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The site is open Tuesday to Friday from 9.3am to 8pm, Monday and Saturday from 10am to 2pm and 3pm to 6pm, and Sunday from 10am to 3pm.\nLast admission 30min before closing time.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Admission is 4.5 euros.<br\/>Free admission for children under 14 and people with disabilities.
