We made our own choices, visited the area anonymously, and paid our bills in full.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is a visit to Gibralfaro Castle worthwhile?<\/h2>\n\n<p>The breathtaking view from the Castillo de Gibralfaro is one of our <a href=\"https:\/\/andalucialovers.com\/en\/best-things-to-do-malaga-visit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">must-sees in Malaga<\/a>. Although the museography inside is rather limited, you&#8217;ll come first and foremost for the walk around the ramparts and the spectacular panorama of Malaga, its port and surrounding valleys.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you can do<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visit the Interpretation Centre<\/h3>\n\n<p>Before you start your walk, take a tour of the interpretation center to learn more about the history of the fortress. Located in the former powder magazine, the tour begins with a model of Muslim Malaga, where we learn about Gibralfaro&#8217;s role in defending the Alcazaba. It also includes several sections devoted to successive historical periods, in which the daily life of the military garrisons who have occupied the site throughout history is presented. After the city was taken by Christian troops in 1487, the Gibralfaro fortress retained its defensive function until the end of the 20th century, when it was handed over to Malaga City Council for civilian use.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Andalucia-Lovers\/Malaga\/Gibralfaro-Castle\/i-JMJM9xn\/0\/MT9kpfd6mpzMmxdf78zCxfKDz64MvkLLskFZqpxDq\/L\/castle-gibralfaro-malaga-spain-04-L.jpg\" alt=\"Overview of the interpretation center at the Castillo de Gibralfaro in Malaga\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stroll along the parapet walk and enjoy the panorama<\/h3>\n\n<p>If there&#8217;s one thing you don&#8217;t want to miss at Gibralfaro Castle, it&#8217;s a walk along the parapet walk, giving you a bird&#8217;s eye view of M\u00e1laga! Covering a total surface area of 21,310 m\u00b2, the ch\u00e2teau boasts an impressive defensive structure, with a 12,630 m\u00b2 inner wall surrounded by a 733-meter wall, comprising 30 sections of wall and 8 massive towers. The barbican, an external defensive element, reinforces the fortress by offering additional protection.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Andalucia-Lovers\/Malaga\/Gibralfaro-Castle\/i-6VQBmvR\/0\/M3RRzwwxNH5j6k898b8bVWjbgjDdqMDTzsBpxtSx5\/L\/castle-gibralfaro-malaga-spain-07-L.jpg\" alt=\"Overview of the ramparts of the Castillo de Gibralfaro in Malaga\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>We loved the contrast between the centuries-old stone and the forest of modern skyscrapers stretching as far as the eye could see. This watchtower, located to the northwest, overlooks the castle&#8217;s only gateway. Inside, the garrison could live in cisterns, rooms and warehouses. The 17-metre-high Grande Tour stands to the south-east, offering a breathtaking view. The origin of the name &#8220;Gibralfaro&#8221; is the result of the union of the Arabic word <em>Guebel <\/em>or <em>Yebel<\/em> and the Greek word <em>Pharos<\/em>, and could be translated as &#8220;Lighthouse Hill&#8221; in reference to a possible lighthouse on its summit. It&#8217;s easy to understand the name when you see the unobstructed view of the sea from the heights!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Andalucia-Lovers\/Malaga\/Gibralfaro-Castle\/i-xfqJTX5\/0\/MTTmGGS6JVmwHNqLQS4r9mt9ht8dfMgnwN2SNSJZd\/L\/castle-gibralfaro-malaga-spain-17-L.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Discover Arab vestiges<\/h3>\n\n<p>Unfortunately, very few Arab remains of the castle&#8217;s interior have survived due to its military use and the many interventions that took place during the Christian period, such as the disappearance of the mosque. The site was then partially dynamited by the French, with the ammunition they were unable to transport, when they abandoned the town during the War of Independence.<br\/>Nevertheless, you&#8217;ll be able to see the bread oven, which provided soldiers with food during periods of siege.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Andalucia-Lovers\/Malaga\/Gibralfaro-Castle\/i-b6PvVkk\/0\/KPswWfFrMd9VVZsqbdDs9DqftgKFSMrVX4KPqnnwg\/L\/castle-gibralfaro-malaga-spain-13-L.jpg\" alt=\"Overview of the bread oven at the Castillo de Gibralfaro in Malaga\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>You can also see the elegant water cistern on the <em>Plaza de Armas<\/em>. This well, dug into the solid rock at a depth of over 30m, was used to store water for soldiers in the event of a prolonged siege.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Andalucia-Lovers\/Malaga\/Gibralfaro-Castle\/i-b5CKsvm\/0\/KfqVL74STmDt4HhgQmnpndP72tdmTFwhSQgQg4Zfd\/L\/castle-gibralfaro-malaga-spain-16-L.jpg\" alt=\"Overview of the cistern at the Castillo de Gibralfaro in Malaga\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Discover an exhibition on plants<\/h3>\n\n<p>During your visit, be sure to observe the vegetation (large cypress trees in particular) that flourishes inside the enclosure. We also appreciated the mediation corridor, with explanations of plants from the Muslim era, used to feed the inhabitants or to treat ailments. This option is handy for avoiding the steep climb on foot.<br\/>If you prefer to walk, the footpath starts at the Alcazaba and winds up to the castle. Allow 15 minutes for the climb. Your effort will be rewarded with several beautiful views of the city.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Andalucia-Lovers\/Malaga\/Best-of\/i-q8rRJQS\/0\/KW47ddsrMz9SdmpPxqC9sSDP3zN9bSRrFRJ244WxX\/L\/visit-city-malaga-spain-13-L.jpg\" alt=\"Panorama from Malaga's Castillo de Gibralfaro\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting difficulties<\/h3>\n\n<p>Bear in mind that if you&#8217;re coming on foot, you&#8217;ll need to climb a sloping path for around 15 minutes to reach the castle entrance.<br\/>Inside the site, you&#8217;ll find several steep staircases leading up to the towers, some of them very high. We therefore recommend that you wear good shoes when visiting this site.<\/p>\n\n<p>Even though there is PRM access, we felt that the route could be complicated for people in wheelchairs.
