We made our own choices, visited the area anonymously, and paid our bills in full.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why visit Malaga&#8217;s Roman Theatre?<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is the Roman Theatre worth it? Our opinion:<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The theater is worth a visit for a great photo of the Roman remains against the backdrop of<a href=\"https:\/\/andalucialovers.com\/en\/visit-alcazaba-castle-malaga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> the Alcazaba<\/a>. Here are a few key dates:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1st century AD: Construction of the theater under the reign of Augustus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3rd century: Theatre gradually abandoned<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5th-6th centuries: The site is transformed into a necropolis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Andalucia-Lovers\/Malaga\/Teatro-Romano\/i-Kw4PNvV\/0\/NHfxWN4Rxt455n54k7L4p7Rf5xNtMSWfL3t39xfgj\/L\/teatro-romano-malaga-spain-09-L.jpg\" alt=\"Roman Theatre of Malaga - A brief history\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A glimpse of the remains from the theater&#8217;s time as a necropolis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For centuries, the theater remained buried beneath streets built on the slope of the Alcazaba, and it was only a stroke of luck that revealed the remains!<br\/>During gardening work in 1951 for the <em>Casa Cultura<\/em>, the first remains of the theater came to light. The following decades were marked by excavations, culminating in the demolition of the <em>Casa de la Cultura<\/em> in 1995 to allow complete excavation of the archaeological site. The Centre d&#8217;Interp\u00e9ration, designed by architect A. Tejedor, was inaugurated in 2010.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Access: Roman Theatre, Malaga<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where is the Roman Theatre?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The theater is located in Malaga city center, at 8 Calle Alcazabilla. It is located at the foot of <a href=\"https:\/\/andalucialovers.com\/en\/visit-alcazaba-castle-malaga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Alcazaba<\/a>. Malaga&#8217;s city center is easy to navigate, and access to the Roman Theater of Malaga is from the Plaza de la Aduana.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re coming by public transport, the nearest bus routes stop at <em>Paseo del Parque<\/em>. From there, it&#8217;s a 12-minute walk. This Roman municipal law governed the political, legal and administrative organization of the colony of Malaca, testifying to its integration into the Roman Empire.  <br\/>Note that the theater was built between the 1st and II\u1d49 centuries AD, part of a period when many public buildings were erected, reflecting the political and economic vitality of the city.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Andalucia-Lovers\/Malaga\/Teatro-Romano\/i-n65QWWQ\/0\/K2KMGCffsb44qhQ5F2xmBNz6Zq8Q6RFLBb2XVGKcj\/L\/teatro-romano-malaga-spain-08-L.jpg\" alt=\"Roman Theatre of Malaga - Overview of the interpretation center\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you enter the building, you&#8217;ll see a number of archaeological remains and a few interpretive panels. For example, we loved the expressiveness of <em>Melpom\u00e8ne<\/em>&#8216;s mask, the muse of tragedy. For the Romans, the mask had a profound meaning, symbolizing the person himself. In addition to reducing the number of actors required, it offered the audience an immediate means of identifying the characters portrayed on stage.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Andalucia-Lovers\/Malaga\/Teatro-Romano\/i-C99Gfdf\/0\/NLcBh583hCWcLJWPkgKM99jGGSHPMzgfsbr4Bc2r4\/L\/teatro-romano-malaga-spain-10-L.jpg\" alt=\"Th&#xE9;&#xE2;tre Romain de Malaga - Mask\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Female theatrical mask in marble, 1st-11th century A.D.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Did you know?<\/strong> The theater, used for almost two centuries, saw its use decline from the end of the II\u1d49 century AD, before being definitively abandoned in the III\u1d49 century. After its abandonment, the site was looted and then reallocated to the salting industry. The town was then studded with <strong><em>pudrideros<\/em><\/strong>where fish and its entrails were transformed into <em>garum<\/em>, a condiment highly prized in ancient cuisine. A number of ponds were built in the theater area for this production, some of which can still be seen today.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Explore the remains of Malaga&#8217;s Roman theater<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you&#8217;ve completed your tour of the museum, you can finally go and admire the remains. The 16-metre-high <em>cavea<\/em> or bleachers are particularly well-preserved. In those days, the stands were divided into three sectors<em>(Ima, Media, Summa<\/em>), access to which depended on social and legal status.  <br\/>Observe also the theater&#8217;s mixed architecture, combining terraces set against the hill, as in Greek theaters, with others resting on artificial foundations.<br\/>Look out for a few mediation panels that give you an idea of what the theater was like in those days!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Andalucia-Lovers\/Malaga\/Teatro-Romano\/i-ScwnnVz\/0\/Mh59csDJfSbHmcMPGQK3246d86KBgchjnpxSw2FVF\/L\/teatro-romano-malaga-spain-12-L.jpg\" alt=\"Th&#xE9;&#xE2;tre Romain de Malaga - Mediation panels\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For our part, we particularly enjoyed the orchestra, a semi-circular space 15 metres in diameter, richly decorated with marble slabs. Its perimeter housed seats reserved for aristocrats and senators. You can even see one still preserved! The stage, meanwhile, has been recreated with a wooden floor faithful to the original. In fact, this is the very stage you&#8217;ll be strolling around on, giving you the chance to improvise as a playwright!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Andalucia-Lovers\/Malaga\/Best-of\/i-RpTJFc5\/0\/Lsw6fXjKKfQF5VV55FcVmm2SvCqVndzDtr2tSSnLZ\/L\/roman-theater-malaga-spain-L.jpg\" alt=\"Roman Theatre of Malaga - Overview of the stands\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you leave, be sure to take a look at the vaulted porch, known as the <em>aditus maximus<\/em>, which provided access to the orchestra. We were amazed to see how the modern urban fabric has been added to the ancient remains.
