Some rental companies refuse to do this when using a debit card.<br\/>If you take out insurance that sets the deductible at zero, you don&#8217;t need a credit card.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4 &#8211; Taking out insurance<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Compulsory insurance<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlimited liability insurance is compulsory in Spain.<br\/>It is automatically included in the price of all car rentals.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Supplements<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For others, it depends on your risk appetite and budget. There is no particular risk in the Malaga region. There are a few unpaved roads to some beaches, but not many.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3 main options:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Option 1<br\/>Your personal car or home insurance covers car rentals (but read the fine print, it&#8217;s rare).<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Option 2<br\/>Take out insurance with the rental platform.<br\/>Advantage: better price than the rental company&#8217;s price<br\/>Disadvantage: you&#8217;ll have to leave the deposit when you pick up your car, and pay it up front in the event of damage. Since we&#8217;ve been using Discovercars, we&#8217;ve always taken their insurance. We called on them following two incidents of damage. And in all cases, refunds were made within 7 days.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Option 3<br\/>Take the complementary car rental. It&#8217;s more expensive, but you won&#8217;t have to pay anything up front and you won&#8217;t have to do any paperwork in the event of damage.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Andalucia-Lovers\/Malaga\/Voiture\/i-xgbpWQm\/0\/LKn8qNvnmZvVhSPWSLT7Rvn8pNQPfWLfjCzvmJfFX\/L\/louer%20voiture%20malaga-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"Malaga - Supplements\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5 &#8211; Access to rental cars<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Malaga airport, you&#8217;ll find all the rental companies&#8217; counters in the basement of the arrivals terminal. Cars are parked in dedicated parking lots nearby.<br\/>The various agencies at the railway station are also well signposted.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Andalucia-Lovers\/Malaga\/Voiture\/i-mXXqxGM\/0\/MQRchR9nrCtTJ364dvG5KSZssDzsCdptcTspWDJM5\/L\/louer%20voiture%20malaga-4-L.jpg\" alt=\"Malaga - How to find a rental car\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6 &#8211; Check your vehicle on pick-up<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Checking the car<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;ve taken advantage of the rental company&#8217;s top-up to set the excess to zero, there&#8217;s no need to check the condition of the car, but make sure you have all the essential equipment.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Otherwise, we recommend (just for peace of mind) that you walk around the car, take photos of any damage and inform the agency if it&#8217;s not noted in the car pick-up document.<br\/>Pay attention:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>fuel level and mileage, that they correspond to the file<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the entire exterior of the car to detect dents and scratches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>on the roof &#8211; It&#8217;s often forgotten, but it may be checked on your return.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>below the bumpers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>rearview mirrors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>inside<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>tire condition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the condition of the wing (mud wing above the wheels)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>spare wheel (if applicable, as fewer and fewer cars have a spare wheel)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mandatory in-car equipment<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Spain, the following equipment must be available:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2 warning triangles, or roof beacons (mandatory)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reflective vest (mandatory)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spare wheel and tools (mandatory)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First-aid kit (recommended but optional)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flashlight (recommended but optional)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fire extinguisher (recommended but optional)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Andalucia-Lovers\/Malaga\/Voiture\/i-MLnSXqG\/0\/KtCrTFFgmXBmmTg8B9wJw2NqvFnTs2HbCP2spfCxf\/L\/louer%20voiture%20malaga-5-L.jpg\" alt=\"Malaga - Compulsory equipment in the car\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Find out more about toll management<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are tolls in Spain.<br\/>You can pay by cash or card. So you don&#8217;t need a pass or stickers from the rental company.<br\/>You are generally required to take a ticket when you enter the freeway, then pay the toll at another booth when you
