Is this a good time to visit?

January is a great time to discover Andalucia. Temperatures remain mild compared with the rest of Europe, fluctuating between 15°C and 17°C during the day on the coast. Sunshine remains generous, with around 5 to 6 hours of sunshine a day. It’s the perfect time to visit cultural cities without the sweltering summer heat. You’ll benefit from low rates and less crowded tourist sites. However, evenings are cool and some mountainous areas can experience sub-zero temperatures.

WHERE TO STAY IN Andalucia

Our independent picks for the accommodation of your dreams:

Where to stay in Andalucia

Select by city:

Best hotels in Sevilla

Best hotels in Malaga

Best hotels in Granada

Best hotels in Cordoba

Best hotels in Ronda

Best hotels in Almeria

Best hotels in Cadiz (coming soon)

Select by hotel type:

Best 5-star hotels (coming soon)

Best boutique hotels (coming soon)

Travelling to Andalucia in January: summary of conditions

Temperatures

Temperatures in Andalucia remain mild in January. On the coast, the thermometer reads between 15°C and 17°C (59°F and 63°F) during the day. Inland, particularly in Sevilla and Cordoba, you can expect temperatures of 14°C to 16°C. Nights are cooler, regularly dipping to around 5°C to 8°C. Winter conditions in the Sierra Nevada are ideal for skiing.

Water temperatures

Mediterranean sea temperatures in January range from 15°C to 16°C (59°F to 61°F) along the Costa del Sol. The Atlantic Ocean, around Cadiz, has similar temperatures. These conditions are not ideal for swimming, except for the most courageous.

Crowds and prizes

January is Andalucia’s low tourist season. Major sites such as Granada’s Alhambra or Sevilla’s cathedral remain accessible without the long summer queues. Accommodation prices can be 30% to 50% lower than in high season. This is an excellent time to negotiate advantageous rates.

Opening conditions

Most major tourist attractions remain open in January, although some opening times may be reduced. Museums and monuments are generally open from 10am to 6pm. Some chiringuitos (beach restaurants) close during the winter. Establishments in the main tourist towns are continuing to operate as normal.

Length of day

Daylight hours average between 9.30 and 10 a.m. This gives you plenty of time to explore the region, even if the days are shorter than in summer.

PLAN YOUR DREAM TRIP TO andalucia

All the information you need for your trip:

7 maps that make planning easier

+ 150 pre-selected locations

Practical advice

300+ photos to help you choose

Discover >>

Best attractions in Andalucia in January

Andalucia in January offers ideal conditions for exploring its cultural treasures. In January, conditions vary from zone to zone. The coast enjoys generally stable, mild weather. Inland, temperature variations are more pronounced. The Sierra Nevada mountains offer authentic winter conditions, ideal for winter sports.

On the coast

The Costa del Sol and Costa de la Luz enjoy pleasant daytime temperatures. The sun shines regularly, warming the atmosphere to 17°C. Sea breezes temper the climate. We found that the afternoons were still pleasant for walks along the seafront. However, evenings require a jacket or sweater.

Inland

Inland cities such as Sevilla, Cordoba and Granada enjoy cool, sometimes foggy mornings. Temperatures gradually rise to 14°C to 16°C in the afternoon. Nights can be cold, sometimes dropping close to 0°C. This coolness makes visiting the monuments more comfortable than in summer.

In the mountains

The Sierra Nevada has a wintry face, with snow on the peaks. The ski resorts are in full swing. Temperatures can drop well below freezing. Mountain villages like Alpujarra retain their charm in a cool but often sunny climate.

January temperatures in Andalucia

Temperatures vary considerably according to altitude and proximity to the sea. January is one of the wettest months of the year. Showers are generally short and intense, typical of the Mediterranean climate. In lowland towns, it remains the exception. Grenada may occasionally see a few flakes, but they don’t usually stay on the ground.

The prevailing winds come from the west, bringing humidity from the Atlantic. The levante, an easterly wind, may blow on the Costa del Sol, bringing drier but sometimes turbulent weather. On the whole, windy conditions remain moderate and do not prevent tourist activities.

Sunshine

In January, daylight hours vary from 9.30am to 10am.
Sunrise is around 8.15am and sunset around 6.15pm.

Andalucia enjoys a remarkable amount of sunshine, even in winter. We counted an average of 5 to 6 hours of sunshine a day in January. The Mediterranean coast tends to be sunnier than the inland areas. Mornings can start out misty, especially in the valleys, but the sun usually shines through by mid-day.

This winter luminosity makes visiting the monuments particularly pleasant. The soft January light sublimates the white facades of Andalucia’s villages and brings out the architectural details of Moorish palaces.

Water temperature – swimming in Andalucia in January

Bathing in January is not the main activity in Andalucia. The seawater remains fresh for most visitors. However, the more courageous can try it out, especially on sunny days. Heated hotel pools and thermal spas offer more comfortable alternatives.

Water temperature in Málaga: 15°C (59°F) on average

Water temperature in Marbella: 15°C (59°F) on average

Average water temperature in Cadiz: 16°C (61°F)

Crowds and other conditions

January is one of the quietest times to visit Andalucia. Major tourist sites remain accessible without booking well in advance. We were able to visit the Alhambra by booking only a few days in advance, which would be impossible in summer. The restaurants and tapas bars in the historic centers maintain an authentic atmosphere, frequented mainly by locals.

Winter conditions create a special atmosphere. The orange trees in the towns are laden with ripe fruit, giving off a distinctive fragrance in the streets. Sunny terraces become popular refuges during the hottest hours of the day. Andalucia people maintain their traditional lifestyle, with late meals and a lively social life despite the cool temperatures.

Winter sports in Sierra Nevada

The Sierra Nevada ski resort, just 30km from Granada, offers excellent conditions in January. With over 100km of pistes and generally good snow conditions, it’s Europe’s most southerly resort. We found it fascinating to ski in the morning and visit the Alhambra in the afternoon. The facilities are modern and the views of the Mediterranean on a clear day are spectacular.

January events in Andalucia

Cabalgata de Reyes (January 5): The processions of the Three Kings light up every Andalucia town with decorated floats, music and candy distribution. Sevilla and Málaga hold particularly spectacular parades.

Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada: Although the main festival is held in summer, classical concerts are programmed in the city’s historic halls.

Feast of San Antón (January 17): Traditional celebrations with animal blessings and bonfires in several villages, including Trevélez in the Alpujarra.

Jerez Flamenco Festival: Late January – early February, this prestigious festival attracts the world’s finest flamenco artists.

<div style="background-color:#fefefe;margin-top:6%;margin-bottom:6%" class="wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-container box
