It skillfully blends Mudejar elements\u2014characteristic of Andalucian architecture\u2014with <strong>Renaissance<\/strong> influences <strong>,<\/strong> which are evident in certain decorative details and the building\u2019s overall structure. <strong>Among<\/strong> the Mudejar elements, you\u2019ll particularly notice the arabesque arches that adorn several areas of the palace. They stand in contrast to the more understated and symmetrical lines typical of a more European style.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Andalucia\/Lebrija-Palace\/i-h7GWLKp\/2\/Kqsb2PS4SqSg777Mb8LPqBwfTK9c4vPXdQ6Mk6XFc\/L\/Lebrija_palace_Seville_Andalucia_Spain-0920-L.jpg\" alt=\"Palace of the Countess of Lebrija in Sevilla, courtyard\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interior Design<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We found the ground floor of the Palace of the Countess of Lebrija remarkable for its <strong>Roman mosaics<\/strong>, which completely cover the floors. These mosaics, from the ancient site of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/s\/?q=s%C3%A9ville+italica&amp;searchSource=8&amp;src=search_bar&amp;adults=1&amp;partner_id=R3GYW4V&amp;cmp=andalucia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">It\u00e1lica<\/a>, are worth the trip on their own.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also note the walls, which are decorated with<strong>azulejos<\/strong>\u2014the colorful ceramic tiles typical of Andalucia. Their presence highlights the Mudejar influence in the interior design, reinforcing the palace\u2019s eclectic character. These azulejos are also characteristic of traditional Sevillian homes.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another highlight of the palace is its coffered ceilings. We were particularly taken with the ones in the summer dining room. This ceiling is decorated with painted depictions of several Spanish cities. This decoration clearly illustrates Countess <strong>Regla<\/strong> <strong>Manj\u00f3n<\/strong> <strong>Mergelina\u2019s<\/strong> desire to combine historical heritage and aesthetics in the restoration of the palace.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Andalucia\/Lebrija-Palace\/i-FRTzgBL\/2\/NVxmjjrFfbN6Bh3ckWKZ2rjbwtRRmTGNN7qRhDnMB\/L\/Lebrija_palace_Seville_Andalucia_Spain-0944-L.jpg\" alt=\"Palace of the Countess of Lebrija in Sevilla, azulejos\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A unique collection<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Roman Mosaics<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Roman mosaics in the Palace of the Countess of Lebrija come mainly from the site of It\u00e1lica, located just 12 km from Sevilla\u2014the first Roman colony in Spain and the birthplace of Emperors Trajan and Hadrian. Set directly into the floors of the ground-floor rooms, they date from the 2nd and 3rd centuries A.D. and cover nearly 580 m\u00b2. The centerpiece is the large mosaic in the central courtyard: its central medallion depicts the god Pan, surrounded by eight medallions illustrating the love affairs of Zeus, while the four corners feature allegories of the seasons. We have rediscovered the major themes of Roman mosaics: mythology, natural cycles, and divine figures.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The countess had these floor tiles transported from the archaeological sites at Italica and other locations to save them from deterioration and use them as the decorative framework of her palace. She was the first woman to be elected a full member of the Santa Isabel de Hungr\u00eda Academy of Fine Arts, and later became a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. In our opinion, this is as much a preservation effort as it is an aesthetic one, and it has earned the palace the title of \u201cthe best-paved palace in Europe\u201d!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Andalucia\/Lebrija-Palace\/i-6dTR8VB\/2\/LxJdcRCx9VSMxpVDwwLgfXkXDGXfdxX5mqs7gWzG7\/L\/Lebrija_palace_Seville_Andalucia_Spain-0935-L.jpg\" alt=\"Palace of the Countess of Lebrija in Sevilla, mosaic detail\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Works of Art<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Palace of the Countess of Lebrija houses a beautiful collection of paintings by Spanish masters. We particularly enjoyed the works of <strong>Bartolom\u00e9 Esteban Murillo<\/strong> and <strong>Francisco de Zurbar\u00e1n<\/strong>. These paintings, on display mainly on the upper floor, illustrate the artistic richness of Baroque Sevilla.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the paintings, the palace features a carefully curated selection of <strong>ceramics<\/strong> and <strong>porcelain<\/strong>, including a remarkable collection of English blue porcelain that we had the opportunity to admire. These decorative pieces, displayed in various rooms, reflect the eclectic taste of Countess Regla Manj\u00f3n Mergelina, who collected them in the early 20th century to enhance the historic atmosphere of the site.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Andalucia\/Lebrija-Palace\/i-JKZSfTx\/2\/NjjH8FcgLDDSBKWzDrnxT47mJ2PFpXmH6pXSV9wSr\/L\/Lebrija_palace_Seville_Andalucia_Spain-0956-L.jpg\" alt=\"The Palace of the Countess of Lebrija in Sevilla, the octagonal room, and the paintings\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Historical Artifacts<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Palace<\/strong> of the <strong>Countess<\/strong> of <strong>Lebrija<\/strong> also houses a remarkable collection of glyptics, consisting notably of ancient gemstones that were also excavated from the archaeological site of It\u00e1lica. You&#8217;ll be able to see these items, which are on display in a dedicated showcase. They exemplify the meticulous art of stone engraving, a practice that was widespread in Roman antiquity. <strong>Beyond<\/strong> glyptics, we have finally discovered a variety of historical objects,
