Don&#8217;t just stay in the historic center. Venture to the south of the city! Here you&#8217;ll find the magnificent Plaza de Espa\u00f1a. We were stunned by its beauty and grandeur. The brick, stone and azulejo buildings were constructed for the<strong>1929 Hispano-American Exhibition<\/strong>. In front of them lies a canal where you can take a <strong>boat<\/strong> ride. So, are you ready for a magical stroll?<br\/><\/p>\n\n<p>Here are some <strong>useful tips<\/strong> for planning your visit to the Plaza de Espa\u00f1a in Sevilla.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/andalucialovers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/visit-plaza-espana-sevilla.jpg\" alt=\"Read our article on Sevilla's Plaza de Espa&#xF1;a.\" class=\"wp-image-923\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>This opinion is completely <strong>independent<\/strong>, based on our experiences. We made our own choices, visited the area anonymously, and paid our bills in full.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is a visit to the Plaza de Espa\u00f1a worthwhile?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Yes, the Plaza de Espa\u00f1a is well worth a visit! In fact, it&#8217;s our favorite place in Sevilla. We&#8217;ve rarely seen a square so beautiful, and it&#8217;s even more so in the sunshine. The square is very busy, with tourists and locals alike, but it&#8217;s so large that you don&#8217;t feel the crowds. Its buildings, designed to host athletic events, form a semicircle 200m in diameter! Designed for the 1929 Hispano-American Exposition to promote ties between Spain, Portugal, Brazil, the United States and Latin America, the Plaza de Espa\u00f1a is now a must-see strolling area, day and night!<\/p>\n\n<p>This is one of Sevilla&#8217;s best activities.<em> <\/em><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Andalucia\/21a-Plaza-de-Espana\/i-wb5D9KC\/2\/C7zp4xJkmbM8QwsDPgW3xmxMrXsJtKZQSTtBrGsBg\/L\/Plaza_de_espana_Seville_Andalucia_Spain-0379-L.jpg\" alt=\"Plaza de Espa&#xF1;a by night.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you can see<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An impressive central building<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Andalucia\/21a-Plaza-de-Espana\/i-6zP38mn\/2\/CLDPjr6z8s3NP4w3q3r94FGts69sQSNZG8h5rBz43\/L\/Plaza_de_espana_Seville_Andalucia_Spain-2889-L.jpg\" alt=\"view on the main building.  \"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The central pavilion boasts particularly refined architecture. We admired its azulejo-adorned arcades with great interest. The importance of this building is highlighted by the fountain, illuminated at night. Under the arcades of the building&#8217;s forecourt, flamenco shows can be enjoyed at random. Perhaps you&#8217;ll be lucky enough to see some?  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A pebble floor with decorative motifs<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Andalucia\/21a-Plaza-de-Espana\/i-RffJSvB\/2\/CQwK9LqbHm97ZWXpmQ8PQ5cWszKSRmgH8bDJH3n5q\/L\/Plaza_de_espana_Seville_Andalucia_Spain-0323-L.jpg\" alt=\"floor\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Near the central fountain, we observed this superb decorative paving, made from different types of pebbles. You can hire a boat for a different view of the square. We&#8217;ll probably do it next time!  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bridges adorned with azulejos<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Andalucia\/21a-Plaza-de-Espana\/i-ZfzzHcM\/2\/DVPXqHF8RMBNhSDFgTLDT9Z85BFQPBMxmH4BD64br\/L\/Plaza_de_espana_Seville_Andalucia_Spain-2904-L.jpg\" alt=\"view on a bridge\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Beautiful bridges span the Plaza de Espa\u00f1a canal. We were stunned by the elegance of the azulejos, in shades of green, yellow and blue. Even the risers have their own azulejos! The 4 bridges symbolize the 4 kingdoms of the Spanish crown: Castilla, Arag\u00f3n, Le\u00f3n and Navarra.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benches representing the Spanish provinces<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Andalucia\/21a-Plaza-de-Espana\/i-FWTNPZQ\/2\/FRTKQBX6cHFfSspCDL3T84Z7RSQM44MH9g4dn7r7\/L\/Plaza_de_espana_Seville_Andalucia_Spain-0341-L.jpg\" alt=\"bench\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Following the same logic as the bridges, the benches leaning against the pavilion walls represent the different Spanish provinces. The brick walls feature 48 panels of azulejos, made in the Triana district. As we admired them, we realized that they were in alphabetical order!  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sophisticated interiors<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Andalucia\/21a-Plaza-de-Espana\/i-gXt8xt3\/2\/DwGVgFMpxsLGKrDVKFPjjspVZhNzvwC5fp3DvMNvb\/L\/Plaza_de_espana_Seville_Andalucia_Spain-0381-L.jpg\" alt=\"interior\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>You can enter any of the pavilions. We also recommend climbing to the top floor for another view of the square. Whether inside the towers or the central building, you&#8217;ll see majestic staircases adorned with azulejos, and wooden ceilings in the Mudejar style (influenced by Islamic art).<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Impressive towers<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Andalucia\/21a-Plaza-de-Espana\/i-j343ZBg\/2\/6vBdQzLt7GX9dVXXvVKhjpm63HvCk7vX2SdJvHc7\/L\/Plaza_de_espana_Seville_Andalucia_Spain-0324-L.jpg\" alt=\"tower\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The Plaza de Espa\u00f1a is bounded by two impressive towers, to the north and south. You can access it here. Even if the spaces are empty, they are adorned with beautiful azulejos. For quicker access, we recommend taking a cab.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Access by car and parking<\/h3>\n\n<p>The roads surrounding the square are busy main thoroughfares. We recommend parking in one of the nearby pay parking lots, such as Parking Meli\u00e1-Sevilla, a 10-minute walk away.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Public transport access<\/h3>\n\n<p>To get to Plaza de Espa\u00f1a from downtown, take streetcar T1 to the &#8220;Prado de San Sebastian&#8221; stop, or bus 01 to &#8220;Avenida La Borbolla&#8221;. You can book this tour, which takes in the Cathedral, the Alcazar and the Torre del Oro, ending at the Plaza de Espa\u00f1a.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting difficulties<\/h3>\n\n<p>Although the ground in the park and square is not very wheelchair-friendly (sand and pebbles), the pavilions are accessible to people with reduced mobility. There are elevators in the towers to take you up to the upper floors.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Toilets are available in the park, next to the square.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Andalucia-Lovers\/Sevilla\/Plaza-de-Espana\/i-9brWG4F\/0\/C22nRnsL4Ff5QszsTQLJ4KqJg3t7TdKCL6886ghvS\/L\/sevilla-plazaespana-pmr-L.jpg\" alt=\"ramp for disabled persons\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting the Plaza de Espa\u00f1a: useful tips<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Schedules and prices<\/h3>\n\n<p>The site is free and can be visited from 8am to midnight!<\/p>\n\n<p>  However, boat hire is not free. You can choose between rowing boats (\u20ac6 per 35 minutes for up to 4 people) and motor boats (\u20ac12 per 15 minutes for up to 12 people).<\/p>\n\n<p>See the latest information on the tourist office website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andalucia.org\/es\/sevilla-visitas-plaza-de-espana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How long<\/h3>\n\n<p>Allow 30min to 1h depending on your interest in the site. There&#8217;s also a refreshment bar offering take-away sales. The area also boasts a number of excellent restaurants, including Michelin-starred Sobretablas.
