This opinion is completely independent, based on our experiences. We made our own choices, visited the area anonymously, and paid our bills in full.
Is a visit to the Palacio de Mondragon worthwhile?
Yes, the Palais is well worth a visit! The palace combines Mudéjar architecture, enchanting Andalusian gardens and ravishing views over the Andalucia countryside.
Beyond this refined setting, you’ll have the chance to discover the collections of the Ronda Municipal Museum, which retraces the rich and complex history of Ronda.
This is one of Ronda’s best attractions.

What you can see
The palace’s preserved architecture
The Palacio de Mondragón is a prime example of Mudéjar architecture, a style that spans the 13th to 16th centuries and fuses elements of Christian and Muslim art. It has been modified and enlarged by the various noble families who have occupied it, most notably the Marquis of Villasierra. You can appreciate the blend of styles between the Renaissance portal on the façade, the traditional Andalusian garden and the other elements of the various patios.

The three patios
Mondragón Palace is a juxtaposition of three architectural styles, each represented by a sector of the palace articulated around a patio. You’ll find the entrance patio with its red arches, the result of the 18th-century reform, when the main facade was built.

You’ll also see the Mudéjar Patio, inherited from the original Andalucia house, which was entered via a covered walkway. And let’s not forget the Castilian patio, added in the 17th century, with its pretty wooden-beamed arcades.

- Choose a compact car, as some villages have very narrow streets!
- Think ofcomprehensive insurance for the same reason
- Book early for choice.

The noble hall
Upstairs, you’ll find the noble hall, presided over by a magnificent Mudejar suit of armor. In this room, we advise you to look up and appreciate the magnificent wooden coffered ceiling, called “artesonado”, typical of Al-Andalusian art.

The municipal museum’s collections
While the architecture of the palace alone is worth a visit, you’ll be amazed by the collections on display at the municipal museum, based on archaeological discoveries made in the Serranía de Ronda region. You’ll pass through a number of themed rooms, including one devoted to the first farming communities, another to the Roman world, and a third to the Muslim funerary world. The presentations are illustrated by models, reconstructions with wax mannequins and various objects from the excavations.

Some remnants of the past
What we appreciated most during our visit to the Palacio de Mondragón were the subtleties to be discovered, such as the finely decorated azulejos, the ancient frescoes and the carved wooden panels.

These are just some of the details that make the visit as charming as it is exciting! We particularly appreciated the dome in the staircase leading to the main hall, with its rich ornamentation.

The charming garden
Once you’ve immersed yourself in the palace’s past, there’s nothing like a bucolic break! Designed in traditional Andalusian style, the Palacio Mondragón garden is a haven of peace, with fountains, ponds, flowerbeds and fruit trees.

Panoramic view of Ronda
The highlight of the tour? Without doubt, the panoramic view from the terraces.
Take time to savor the view of Ronda’s whitewashed houses against the backdrop of the beautiful green valley.

How long
You can visit :
- In just 30 minutes if you come just to visit the palace and admire the panoramic views. In fact, the visit is brief, as there are no period rooms with furnishings. Nevertheless, you can keep your eyes peeled for antique features such as azulejos, vault details and ceiling designs!
- In 1 hour if you decide to visit the collections of the municipal museum, offering a rich collection of archaeological objects, historical artifacts and documents that tell the story of Andalucia, from prehistory to modern times.
The visit to the museum part is quite dense, given the many explanatory panels. Note that the signs are in English and Spanish.

Best moment
Like all Ronda’s tourist attractions, we advise you to come at the opening or at the end of the day to enjoy the peace and quiet.
Direction of visit
There’s no set order for visiting the palacio, but we recommend you visit the various patios first, to admire the overall décor (ceilings, arches, sculpted doors) and the magical view from the garden. You can then decide whether you have the energy and desire to explore the museum’s archaeological collections.
And don’t forget to visit the boutique!

Visiting with children
The visit can be interesting with your children, if you linger in the rooms of the museum. Indeed, the museography is quite playful, and you’ll find reproductions of caves and reconstructions with mannequins to keep your children amused.
Note, however, that while a small French-language explanatory booklet is provided at the entrance, the educational panels are in Spanish and English only.
