Is Jerez de la Frontera worth a visit?
Yes, Jerez de la Frontera is well worth a visit. The city is particularly well known for its centuries-old sherry cellars and equestrian art, but you’ll be won over by its flamenco shows and rich architectural heritage. We were particularly struck by the authenticity of its historic streets.
If you don’t have a car, you can also discover Jerez de la Frontera on an organized tour from Cadiz or Sevilla.

1. Enjoy the serenity of the Alcázar, between gardens and historic ramparts

Dating from the 12th century, the Alcázar is the oldest building in Jerez. We were impressed by the richness of this fortress, which includes a Christianized mosque, Arab baths and octagonal towers. These reflect a dual organization: military and civilian. You’ll particularly appreciate the Villavicencio Palace. Built in 1664, its tower houses a Camera Obscura with a 360° panoramic view of the city and countryside.
- Opening hours: Daily, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. (October to June) and 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. (July to September)

2. Be moved under the majestic vaults of the Gothic Cathedral

Built between 1695 and 1778, Jerez Cathedral harmoniously combines Gothic, Baroque and Neoclassical styles. Inside, we were impressed by its tall, grooved columns and sculpted ceilings. You can also admire a rich collection of works of art, including a Virgin Mary by Francisco de Zurbarán. The famous Cristo de la Viga, a 15th-century Gothic crucifix, is a real beauty.
- Opening hours: Monday to Saturday 10am to 7pm, Sunday 1pm to 7pm

3. Enjoy panoramic views of the city from the cathedral tower

The cathedral tower is the second highest in Jerez and the only one accessible to visitors. We climbed the 100-odd steps to the top, where a 360° view of the city awaited us. Like us, you’ll be rewarded for your effort by a spectacular panorama and the impressive presence of the giant bells that give rhythm to the life of the city.

At the foot of the Alcázar, we discovered the charming Square Alameda Viejo, a haven of peace from the Islamic era. Geometric gardens and fountains create a peaceful atmosphere. 6. Admire the richly carved facade of San Miguel Church

In the narrow streets of the old town, we were impressed by the facade of San Miguel Church, in our opinion one of the most beautiful in Jerez. Despite its modest size, it exudes a striking sense of grandeur. Built in the 15th century during the reign of Alfonso X, it took several hundred years to complete. Take time to admire the details of its baroque façade.

7. Taste the sobriety of San Dionisio Church and its Mudejar tower

On the beautiful Plaza Asuncion, the Church of San Dionisio boasts a distinctive Mudejar-style exterior. We skirted around it to admire its Torre de la Atalaya, a 15th-century civil tower once used as a watchtower. In addition to the church, don’t miss the square and, in particular, the Antiguo Cabildo (Old Town Hall), a 16th-century Renaissance structure.

8. Observe the refinement of the Palacio del Virrey Laserna

Built on the foundations of an Arab palace, the Palacio del Virrey Laserna won us over with its rich family history and elegant neoclassical style. We particularly liked the interior: spacious rooms with refined decor. A visit to the palace gives an idea of the grandiose lifestyle of the Andalucia aristocracy.
