Is the Hotel Palacio Miramar worth it? Our review
Ideally located near the Playa de Malagueta, the Centre Pompidou Malaga and the historic center, the Hotel Palacio Miramar is perfect for exploring Malaga’s ambivalence between beaches and heritage. Last but not least, the beauty of the surroundings and the quality of the services offered make the Gran Hotel Miramar a luxury address where you can feel truly privileged.
This exceptional address is one of Malaga’s finest hotels, and we recommend it for those in search of a moment out of time!

Decoration and atmosphere
The Palacio Miramar captivates with its majestic, refined architecture. Take a look at the immaculate white facade, with its intricate combination of ornate balconies and elegant arcades that give it a timeless charm! We also liked the contrast with the green of the palm trees, which you’ll find in a lush garden at the entrance to the site.
Finally, the presence of fountains adds a note of freshness and serenity to the whole.

As soon as we arrived, we were won over by the exceptional entrance hall organized like a patio. You won’t know where to turn between the walls decorated with traditional azulejos, the majestic arches supported by columns with finely sculpted capitals, the many hanging crystal chandeliers or the decoration of the glass roof.
A good excuse to have a drink in this enchanting space!

But what really makes this hotel unique is the ultra-personalized service. Warm, smiling and attentive, the team members are multilingual and do their best to meet customers’ needs through the bellhop and concierge services.

The room
Our room was a veritable showcase of Baroque refinement, where every decorative detail seemed meticulously thought out. Light tones dominated, with gray velvet curtains, marble-effect flooring and cream wood furniture. Elegant ceiling moldings, gilded brass sconces and a rhinestone chandelier added a touch of sophistication.

We spent an excellent night in the king-size bed, whose wooden frame with a white rattan cane opening reinforced the impression of a cocoon. The lounge area, with its sofa and coffee table, provided an ideal space to relax. We also appreciated the little touches: the bed carefully tucked in for the night, between check-in and bedtime, and the refined touch of a fresh orchid in the living room!

Finally, the height of luxury! We had opted for a sea-view room, allowing us to enjoy the azure horizon from our bed, as well as the beautiful view of the pool, the sea and the palm trees of Malaga Bay.

The bathroom
The bathroom in our room was rather small but well equipped. It had both a shower and a bath, and we were pleasantly surprised to find hygiene products from the Bvlgari cosmetics brand. In addition to large, fluffy towels, we were provided with a bathrobe, slippers and a vanity kit.

The breakfast
The breakfast at the Grand Hotel Miramar is, in our opinion, the best in Malaga! The buffet offers a vast choice of sweet and savoury products, with exceptional products such as the selection of olive oils and the incredible variety of different charcuterie. Special mention should be made of the corner dedicated to local specialties, where you can sample olives, Malaga salchichón and borrachuelos, a traditional Andalucia pastry.

In addition to the cold buffet, the restaurant offers hot dishes to order! For our part, we feasted on a tasty tomato and bell pepper omelette made in minute! We also loved the freshly squeezed juices from different citrus fruits, as well as the different kinds of bread, which were really delicious.

You can choose to have breakfast in the pleasantly bright room with its blue and white Mediterranean tones, or opt for breakfast under the hotel’s elegant gazebo and enjoy the sunshine and murmuring water from the adjoining fountains.

Equipment and common areas
The Grand Hotel Miramar boasts a large outdoor swimming pool, with a lap pool (very rare in Malaga, where pools are more like paddling pools) and a shallower children’s pool. A lifeguard is on hand to ensure guests’ safety, while the pool bar offers refreshing cocktails and a snack menu to satisfy the munchies.

There are several deckchairs around the pool, as well as an area hidden by hedges for those who prefer a little privacy. You can also access Playa de la Malagueta directly from the pool.

The hotel spa, located on level 0, offers a wide selection of top-of-the-range treatments and massages using Sisley products. You’ll find an air-conditioned swimming pool with jets, a Finnish sauna, a hammam, an ice fountain and sensory showers, ideal for forgetting everyday life and recharging your batteries.
Find out more about the spa’s services here.

Other facilities that make this hotel stand out include a TV lounge, large function rooms and the possibility of renting bicycles to tour the city.

The restoration
The hotel offers a number of restaurants to satisfy every taste and appetite. Just note that the price of the dishes is rather high, given that we’re in a palace. There’s also a Mediterranean restaurant serving breakfast and lunch buffets.

The terrace restaurant Botanico offers a lunch menu (salads, fish, grilled meats) served on the terrace or a snack menu (sandwiches, tapas, cocktails) served by the pool.

If you’re in the mood for an exceptional dinner, you can opt for the Restaurant Príncipe de Asturias, which offers a menu based on local products and a beautiful sea view.

Finally, if there’s one experience you must try, it’s a drink in the Royal Lounge Coffee Bar, located on the Palace Miramar’s exceptional patio.
In this refined setting, the delicate notes of jazz blend harmoniously with the elegance of the surroundings, while the attentive service enhances the moment.

However, we were disappointed by the rooftop bar Media Luna Chill out. While the sea view is an undeniable asset, the surrounding urban environment somewhat moderates the panoramic experience. The overall ambience could be redesigned to better reflect the establishment’s standing, with more refined furnishings and a more subdued musical atmosphere.

History
Here are a few key dates in the hotel’s history:
- 1926: Inauguration on February 10 by King Alfonso XIII after five years of construction. Designed by architect Fernando Guerrero Strachan as his masterpiece, it was originally named Hôtel Príncipe de Asturiasbefore being renamed Hôtel Miramar during the Second Republic.
- 1936-1937: During the Civil War, the building was transformed into a military hospital until Franco’s troops entered the city on February 7, 1937.
- 1939-1967: Return to its function as a luxury hotel after the Civil War. It welcomed European royalty, cultural figures and Malaga industrialists, before closing in 1967.
- 1987-2007: The palace is refurbished to house the Malaga Provincial Court. The courts left the building in 2007 for the Cité de la justice, leaving it derelict.
- 2014: Launch of a renovation project to restore the hotel to its original splendor, with particular challenges concerning the reconstruction of the historic staircases and the preservation of the gardens.
- 2017: Hoteles Santos reopens the hotel.
