Zuheros is a small white village nestled between Córdoba and Granada. We found it particularly charming, with its whitewashed narrow streets, its castle perched on a rocky outcrop, and the Rio Bailon canyon that opens up just below.

Check out our ideas for things to do in Zuheros, illustrated with photos that will make you want to go there. Bonus: useful tips and additional activities.

Helpful Tips for Visiting Zuheros

Is the village of Zuheros worth a visit?

Yes, the village of Zuheros is worth a visit. We loved its small size, its white-washed streets, its castle nestled in the rock, and the canyon that opens up just behind it—far from the hustle and bustle of the region’s more crowded villages.
In our opinion, it is one of the most beautiful villages in Andalucia, even though it is less well-known because it is more remote.

1. Take a stroll through the narrow streets of the white village

The Village of Zuheros - Streets of the White Village

We begin our tour with a stroll through the narrow streets of the white village of Zuheros, where the whitewashed houses are adorned with potted plants according to a local tradition that symbolizes family. The ground is generally easy to walk on and isn’t too hard on your ankles, so you can wander around without a specific route in mind: the village is still small enough to explore comfortably.
The castle tower makes it easy to get your bearings.

Zuheros was originally founded to guard the Camino de los Metedores, the old smugglers’ trail, before soldiers built a castle there at the end of the 9th century, named Sujaira. Conquered by Ferdinand III in 1240, it then became a frontier outpost facing the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada, before returning to the jurisdiction of Córdoba in 1293. We enjoyed the authentic atmosphere, which was quite different from the more touristy villages.

2. Explore the church’s main square

Zuheros - Main Square, Church, and Castle

We continue on to the main square, where the Nuestra Señora de los Remedios Church stands facing the rocky promontory of the castle. There you’ll find a fountain, people relaxing and enjoying the atmosphere, cafés and restaurants, and a viewpoint overlooking the plain.

The church was once a mosque: only the base of the minaret remains today, in the form of the bell tower. Inside, a 13th-century altarpiece houses a sculpture of the Virgin Mary, which you can admire up close.

3. The Castle (Castillo Sujayra)

A castle nestled in the rock

The Castillo de Zuheros overlooks the village from its hilltop. Built in the late 9th century by soldiers who named it Sujayra, it gave its name to the town. A Renaissance-style renovation carried out in the 16th century added a stately palace to it.

The fortress blends seamlessly with the natural rock, an architectural choice that reinforces its defensive character. We consider it one of the most beautiful small castles in Andalucia.

4. Enjoy the views from the castle’s fortifications

Zuheros - View of the plain

From the fortifications located below the castle, we enjoyed views that took in the entire region, which is renowned for its olive oil production.

Zuheros - View of the mountains

From certain viewing platforms, you’ll also be able to see part of the nearby canyon, which we’ll describe in more detail below. Zuheros is located on the edge of the Sierra Subbética, a UNESCO Global Geopark that encompasses 14 villages surrounding a vast natural park. This situation explains the variety of views the village offers.

5. Visit the small museums in Zuheros

Museum of Costumes and Folk Arts
Museum of Costumes and Folk Arts

Three small museums round out the tour of Zuheros. The Museum of Costumes and Folk Arts, located at the entrance to the village, displays objects related to rural life in days gone by, but is open to the public only in the late afternoon on Fridays, as well as on weekends and holidays. Across from the church, the Archaeological Museum displays prehistoric artifacts found in the nearby cave, including Neolithic pottery. We also recommend the Francisco Poyato Museum, which is dedicated to this local artist and features his drawings, paintings, and sculptures; it is open Wednesday through Sunday.

  • Archaeological Museum: included in the combined castle ticket; closed on Mondays
  • Francisco Poyato Museum: Open Wednesday through Sunday
  • Visit the city’s official website for more info here.

5. Spend a night near Zuheros

Accommodation options are still limited if you want to spend the night in Zuheros itself. We recommend checking availability in advance or considering staying in a larger city such as Córdoba or Granada—both of which are just over an hour’s drive away—and then making a day trip to the village.

6. Hiking in the Rio Bailon Canyon

Zuheros - Rio Bailon Canyon

The Rio Bailon Canyon, carved by the river through the limestone, begins just below the village. The loop trail first follows the river, offering views of the village and the surrounding cliffs, then heads off into a lush valley where the ruins of farms still stand. You’ll finish the hike in the middle of a plain dotted with olive trees.

  • Long loop: about 4 hours for 13 km
  • Short loop: about 2 hours for 4.5 km
  • Avoid after heavy rain
  • There are other hiking trails in the area

7. Explore the Cueva de los Murciélagos (Bat Cave)

Bat Cave

The Cueva de los Murciélagos is located above the village, at the end of the CV-247 road, 4 km from the center. This cave system, discovered in 1968, is home to one of the largest bat colonies in Andalucia. Excavations there have uncovered graves indicating human occupation dating back 35,000 years, as well as Upper Paleolithic paintings depicting horses, bears, and goats.

Of the 2,000 meters of tunnels, only 450 meters are open to visitors on guided tours, which are limited to 30 people. We strongly recommend that you make a reservation, especially since, in winter, tour schedules may be subject to change depending on conditions.

  • Guided tours only; reservations must be made by phone or email
  • Closed on Monday
  • Estimated price: about €8 per adult
  • Visit the official website for more info here.

Other Attractions in Zuheros and the Surrounding Area

Here are a few additional ideas to help you explore Zuheros and its surroundings further.

Other Hiking Trails in the Sierra Subbética

In addition to the Rio Bailon loop, the region offers other hiking trails to explore if you decide to extend your stay in the Sierra Subbética.

The Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park

Zuheros is located on the edge of the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park, a UNESCO Global Geopark. This vast region encompasses 14 villages and is an ideal destination for nature lovers and hikers.

How to Get to Zuheros + Parking

  • In Andalucia, on the N432 highway, not far from Alcaudete, between Córdoba and Granada
  • From Córdoba to Zuheros: a 1-hour-and-15-minute drive
  • Granada to Zuheros: 1 hour and 40 minutes by car
  • Jaén to Zuheros: 1-hour drive

How to get there

In our opinion, a car is still the best way to get to Zuheros. The mountain road leading to the village poses no particular difficulties: there is one lane in each direction. We have not identified any significant public transportation options or organized tours that provide direct access to the village.

Parking in Zuheros

Parking is limited due to the terrain, which is built into the mountainside. You’ll find a few parking spots near the village entrance, or a larger parking lot near the canyon entrance—though that means a steeper climb up to the castle. Public restrooms are available near the castle.

Helpful Tips for Visiting Zuheros

How long and when?

Allow about 2 hours to explore the village, or more if you plan to hike in the canyon.

Visiting with children

It’s a village that kids love because it’s not too big and has a castle nestled among the rocks!

Restaurants

We haven’t tried the restaurants in Zuheros yet. Since the village is small, there aren’t many places to eat, but you should be able to find somewhere to grab a bite to eat near the main square.

Visiting Zuheros in Winter

In winter, the mountain climate makes the days in Zuheros noticeably cooler. The village is partially closed.
