The most famous region full of these villages is around Ronda. But there are also quite a few north of Cádiz.
You can find organized tours that take you to one or two villages.
But the best option is to rent a car to explore them.

1. Setenil by Bodegas

Why visit
Setenil de las Bodegas is a unique village in Andalucia that offers you an unforgettable experience. Its most distinctive feature is the way the houses are built directly into the rock. We were fascinated.
The village has existed since the 22nd century, but evidence of human settlement dates back much further.
There, you’ll discover cave restaurants, narrow streets nestled beneath the rocks, and plenty of scenic viewpoints.

Useful tips
- There are several parking lots; one is near the village entrance, but it fills up quickly. The others are a 5-minute walk further.
- Be sure to arrive early. It’s a very touristy village, so it gets crowded around midday.
- The lower part is easy to explore—there are stairs or slopes from which to admire the rest of the village and the views.

2. Frigiliana

Why visit
Frigiliana is a charming white village in Andalucia. Its well-preserved old town is characterized by a maze of narrow alleys and whitewashed houses, creating a picturesque atmosphere. It is often considered the “prettiest village in Andalucia.”
With its pristine white houses, flower pots, and ocean views in the background, it’s a very photogenic village.
Frigiliana is known for its artisan shops, local cuisine, and festivals, as it attracts many artists.

Useful tips
- Paid underground parking near the main square—very convenient.
- The village is very hilly, so as soon as you want to explore a bit, you’ll find yourself navigating stairs and sloping alleys.
- A small tourist train that takes you through some neighborhoods (but not through the prettiest alleys, since they’re very narrow).
- Be sure to arrive early. It’s a very touristy village, so it gets crowded around midday.
- Many restaurants.

3. Zuheros
>> Closer to Jaén / Córdoba

Why visit
Zuheros is a small white village that is much less well-known because it is farther from the major tourist centers. It offers you a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and authentic Spanish charm.
Nestled beneath limestone cliffs in the Sierra Subbetica Natural Park, it is surrounded by olive groves. It is also dominated by a 9th-century castle that is built into a rocky outcrop. Impressive!

- Travel time from Jaen: 1 hour
- Travel time from Málaga: 1 hour 40 minutes
- A short drive on a mountain road—nothing too difficult.
Useful tips
- There are a few parking spots in the village, which makes it easy to visit. But it fills up quickly.
- A larger parking lot below the castle (near the starting point of the hiking trail through the canyon), and a steep slope leading up to the village

4. Grazalema

Why visit
Grazalema is a beautiful, well-maintained white village nestled in the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, at an elevation of 800 meters. The village is picturesque, nestled at the bottom of the valley and surrounded by limestone mountains.
From the village streets, you can enjoy the whitewashed houses along with the surrounding nature! Grazalema is famous for its artisanal products, particularly the delicious Payoya cheese.

5. Montefrio — famous National Geographic photo

Why visit
Montefrio is often considered the most famous of Andalucia’s white villages. It’s all thanks to a National Geographic photo (Now they’ve even set up a frame so tourists can take a picture from exactly the same angle…).
To be honest, it doesn’t have the prettiest narrow streets of all the white villages, but this view (photo above) is truly unforgettable and so typical of Andalucia!
The village has two remarkable churches: the Iglesia de la Villa, built on the site of an old castle, and the Iglesia de la Encarnación, a unique, round-shaped church.

6. Olvera

Why visit
Olvera is best known for its exterior views, featuring its 12th-century Moorish castle and its neoclassical church. But we also really loved the view from the square between the church and the castle, with all the rooftops spread out below us. And the olive groves all around!
With its authentic Andalusian charm and fewer tourists than more popular destinations, Olvera offers a peaceful and immersive experience of rural Spanish life.

Why visit
Zahara de la Sierra is a captivating white village because it is spectacularly perched on a hill overlooking a turquoise reservoir (Embase de Zahara el Gastor).
Perched on a hilltop, the village is dominated by its 13th-century Moorish castle and tower. This village was strategically located between Sevilla and Ronda.

8. Medina Sidonia

Why visit
Medina Sidonia is a town with a historic center that resembles a white village. The main entrance with an Arabic-style door.
In the lower parts of the town, you’ll discover beautiful 16th-century buildings, and at the top, be sure to visit the church and the castle ruins.
We love the various features of this historic downtown area, which has evolved over the years.

9. Capileira (in the Sierra Nevada)

Why visit
In the Sierra Nevada, there is a famous trio of white villages in the Barranco de Poqueira Valley; they are located at an altitude of over 1,000 meters. The highest one is Capileira. It’s the most famous and the most popular with tourists. From its narrow streets, it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
This is the starting point for some beautiful hikes in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

- The highest of the three villages.
- Travel time from Granada: 1 hour 30 minutes

10. Vejer de la Frontera

Why visit
Vejer is the most famous of the white villages nestled between Cádiz and Tarifa.
The old walled town features a maze of narrow streets lined with traditional white houses that are well maintained.
You can explore the medieval castle, stroll along the ancient ramparts, and discover hidden courtyards.
But be careful—it’s easy to get lost there!
You can tell it’s livelier than the villages, which makes it even more appealing.

11. Arcos de la Frontera

Why visit
Arcos de la Frontera is one of the most spectacular white villages in Andalucia. It is impressive, perched atop a limestone ridge. We’ve always enjoyed admiring it from afar. But from the village, you can also enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the Guadalete River.
Inhabited since prehistoric times, it became a key defensive stronghold during the Middle Ages thanks to its castle. Don’t miss the basilica either!

12. Montoro

Why visit
Montoro is a very picturesque town nestled in a bend of the Guadalquivir River.
It is best known for the views from various vantage points in the area, which highlight the contrast between its wooden houses, the ochre color of the tower, and the green of the fertile valley.
You can capture its beauty from nearby as you get closer, or from the bridge.

13. Pampaneira

Why visit
Of the famous trio of villages in the Sierra Nevada, this is the one at the lowest elevation.
It’s completely different in style and atmosphere. It is small and centered around a charming square and a church.
It’s less “picture-perfect.” We really liked its more authentic look.

Where is the village located?
- Between Granada and Motril
- In the Sierra Nevada Mountains
- The lowest of the three villages.
- Travel time from Granada: 1 hour and 15 minutes

14. Cave Village in Guadix

Why visit
It’s not really a village but a neighborhood in the city of Guadix, but it really looks like a village, and it’s a place that’s very different from the others!
Located on a high plateau, Guadix is a fascinating town. It dates back to the Phoenicians.
In the oldest part of the city, most residents live in cave dwellings carved into the ochre hills, dating back to the 15th century.

15. Mijas

Mijas is one of the most popular “white villages” in Andalucia because of its location near the Costa del Sol.
It is a network of narrow alleys lined with whitewashed houses.

Nerja, Baeza, Tarifa…
We haven’t listed certain other names in this article; you’ll find them in other articles. That’s because, in our view, they don’t quite fit the definition of Pueblos Blancos, either in terms of architecture or size.
