Going to Andalucia in June: quick answers
What’s the weather like in Andalucia in June? Is this a good time to visit?
June marks Andalucia’s transition to summer. The sun reigns almost unchallenged, temperatures rise sharply inland and the sea reaches bathing temperatures. It’s a month we gladly recommend to those looking for warmth and beaches, while still avoiding the overcrowding of July and August. Daylight hours are in excess of 14.30 hours, offering considerable scope for organizing visits. On the other hand, afternoons in Sevilla and Cordoba can exceed 35°C in the second half of the year, so it’s best to plan ahead and reserve cultural outings for the mornings and evenings. Tourist numbers are high but manageable, especially at the beginning of the month. Book accommodation and entrance tickets in advance, especially for Granada’s Alhambra.

On the Atlantic side, towards Cadiz and the Costa de la Luz, temperatures oscillate between 19°C and 21°C, slightly cooler due to Atlantic currents. Swimming is comfortable for the vast majority of visitors throughout the month.

Climate in Andalucia in June – weather forecast
The Andalusian climate in June is that of a summer that is gradually but surely taking hold. The sky is almost cloudless, the rain is almost absent and the sun dominates from start to finish. We observed a clear difference between the coast, where the sea breeze moderates the afternoons, and the inland towns, where the heat can become intense. It’s a month that rewards morning travelers: the sites are cool and uncrowded in the morning, whereas they can be sweltering in the middle of the day.
On the coast
The Costa del Sol and Costa de la Luz enjoy very pleasant summer conditions in June. The thermometer regularly reaches 26°C to 28°C during the day, tempered by a constant sea breeze that makes walks and water sports activities comfortable. We enjoyed the quality of the sunsets over the Atlantic from the beaches of Cadiz and Bolonia, particularly long and colorful in June. The beaches are busy, but not yet at the density of August.

Inland
Inland cities such as Sevilla, Cordoba and Granada experience pronounced afternoon heat in June. Days in Sevilla regularly exceed 33°C to 36°C in the second half of the year. The local strategy is well-honed: mornings are devoted to sightseeing and activities, the mid-day break comes naturally in the shade of a terrace or in the cool of a patio, and life resumes in full swing from 6pm onwards. We found this rhythm very pleasant once we’d adopted it: lively evenings, late dinners and evening strolls through the old quarters are one of the real pleasures of an Andalusian holiday in June.
In the mountains
The Sierra Nevada lost almost all its snow cover in June, with the exception of the highest peaks above 3000m. The slopes and villages of the Alpujarras offer lush green surroundings and much milder temperatures than in the lowland towns: on average, it’s 5°C to 8°C cooler than in Granada. The hiking trails are in excellent condition and the views over the Granada plain and the coast are particularly unobstructed. It’s one of the region’s most pleasant places to spend a summer’s day, less than an hour’s drive from Granada.

Rain and Wind
June is one of the driest months of the year in Andalucia. Rain is rare and showers, when they do occur, are generally limited to brief, short-lived disturbances at the beginning of the month. In the second fortnight, rainfall was almost non-existent, especially in inland towns. We didn’t have to change our schedule once because of rain during a stay in June.
- Rainfall in Sevilla: 10 to 20 mm
(1 to 2 days on average) - Rainfall in Málaga: 5 to 15 mm
(1 to 2 days on average) - Rainfall in Granada: 15 to 25 mm
(over 2 days on average)
Snow is totally absent from the plains and towns in June. Even on the Sierra Nevada, it only remains above 3,000m on the highest ridges, with no impact on travel in the region.
The levante, a dry, warm easterly wind, can occasionally blow over the Costa del Sol and the Strait of Gibraltar, sometimes for two to four consecutive days. These episodes are frequent in summer in this area: they raise temperatures and can make water sports uncomfortable. Inland, conditions are generally calm. The poniente, a milder westerly wind, brings fine conditions to the Costa de la Luz and the surf spots of Cadiz.

Sunshine
In June, daylight hours vary from 2:30 to 3:00 pm.
Sunrise is around 6:45 a.m. and sunset around 9:30 p.m. at the end of the month.
Sunshine is at its peak in June: we counted an average of 10 to 11 hours of sunshine a day. It’s the sunniest month of the year in most parts of Andalucia. The light is intense in the middle of the day, which makes for high-contrast photos, but can also make for exhausting walks between 12pm and 5pm. We’ve got into the habit of devoting these hours to taking a break on a shady terrace or visiting cool interiors such as Arab baths or mosque-cathedrals.
Long summer evenings are one of the great things about June in Andalucia. The sun sets after 9:30 pm, allowing us to visit the sites in the late afternoon in a particularly favorable low-angled golden light. The viewpoints from the Albaicín in Granada, the banks of the Guadalquivir in Sevilla or the ramparts of Almería offer panoramas of rare quality at this time of day. Neighborhood life picks up fully after 7pm, and evenings naturally continue until midnight or beyond in the tapas bars.

Water temperature – swimming in Andalucia in June
June is an excellent month for swimming in Andalucia. The Mediterranean Sea is warm enough for widespread comfort, and the beaches of the Costa del Sol start to fill up at the beginning of the month. On the Atlantic side, the slightly cooler temperatures are perfect for surfing and water sports enthusiasts. The swell conditions on the Costa de la Luz attract many surfers in June, before the sea calms down with the heat of August.
- Water temperature in Málaga: 22°C (72°F) on average
- Water temperature in Marbella: 22°C (72°F) on average
- Average water temperature in Cadiz: 20°C (68°F)

Crowds and other conditions
June offers a balance that we still consider favorable compared with July and August, particularly in the first fortnight. Heritage sites are busy but not yet saturated, and you can visit the Alhambra or the Mezquita in reasonable conditions, provided you have booked in advance. The situation changes in the second half of the year, with the influx of European holidaymakers: the beaches of the Costa del Sol and the historic centers of Sevilla and Granada fill up even more, and queues grow longer at popular sites.
A few practical points to bear in mind: the heat of the afternoon imposes a different rhythm to that adopted in Northern Europe. Local restaurants serve lunch between 2pm and 4pm, and dinner rarely before 9:30pm. This lunchtime break is an opportunity to settle down in a shady café or visit one of the region’s many cool interiors: Arab baths, cathedrals or air-conditioned museums. The Arab baths in Cordoba and Granada offer evening sessions, which are very popular after a day of sightseeing.

Nature and landscapes in June
The Andalucia countryside is transformed in June. Sunflower fields are in full bloom on the plains of Sevilla and Cordoba, creating intense yellow expanses that contrast with the white of the hilltop villages and the blue of the sky. Olive groves and vineyards take on a golden hue in the late afternoon light. On the other hand, vegetation is beginning to dry out on the most exposed slopes: dry grass and ochre earth are gradually replacing the spring green of May. We found this warm color palette very characteristic of Andalusian summer.
As far as wildlife is concerned, from the Costa del Sol , dolphin and whale-watching trips are at their best all year round. The sea is calm, visibility excellent and the diversity of species present significant. Bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins and transient killer whales are regularly reported off the Strait of Gibraltar. The Doñana Natural Park, a Unesco World Heritage Site, is also seeing its wetlands shrink with the heat: birds are concentrating around the last remaining waterholes, which paradoxically makes birdwatching easier.

Events in June in Andalucia
- Corpus Christi in Granada and Sevilla: this Catholic religious festival, whose date varies between the end of May and the end of June depending on the year, gives rise to solemn processions through the streets of Andalucia’s major cities. In Granada, the celebrations are particularly well-attended and are accompanied by the Feria del Corpus, a popular festival lasting several days with cavalcades, concerts and entertainment in the district around the Alameda park. This is one of the great popular festivals of Grenada, very different in atmosphere from the more sober processions of Holy Week.
- Noche de San Juan (June 23): the night of June 23-24 is celebrated on all the beaches of Andalucia with bonfires, midnight swims and fireworks. It’s one of the liveliest nights of the year on the coast: the beaches of Málaga, Cadiz and Almería gather thousands of people to welcome the summer solstice. Even if you’re not superstitious, the festive atmosphere alone is worth the trip.
- Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada: this classical music, flamenco and dance festival, one of the oldest in Spain, is held every year in June and July. Performances are organized in exceptional settings: the Palace of Charles V inside the Alhambra, the Teatro Isabel la Católica and the Monastery of San Jeronimo (15th-16th centuries). The program combines international orchestras, dance companies and renowned flamenco artists.

June prices
As everywhere, prices vary depending on what you are looking for. Accommodation ranges from youth hostels to 5-star hotels. It is therefore difficult to give a budget. In June, rates are significantly higher than in spring, and continue to rise throughout the month, especially for accommodation by the sea and in historic town centers. The first fortnight remains more affordable than the second. Seasonal rentals are often booked several months in advance for weekends at the end of June. Away from the coast, inland towns such as Cordoba and Granada remain more affordable than the seaside resorts.
