Playa del Palo (Malaga): tips + photos

Want to escape the hustle and bustle of Malaga? The charming Playa del Palo, located in the extension of Pedregalejo to the east of Malaga and very popular with the locals, is ideal. Located in the El Palo district, a true fishermen’s stronghold, this beach retains a popular and authentic soul, while offering an ideal setting for families with its fine sandy coves protected by seawalls.

Here are some useful tips for planning your visit to Playa del Palo in Malaga.

Swimming at Playa del Palo in Malaga

Is Playa del Palo worth it?

Yes, this is a must-see beach for anyone seeking authentic Malagasy charm away from the more touristy areas. Playa del Palo is the beating heart of the town’s maritime tradition, where fishing boats ( jábegas) still rest on the sand.

The ultimate experience here is to enjoy espetos, sardine skewers grilled over a wood fire on the beach, often at lower prices than elsewhere. After a swim, wander through the neighborhood’s narrow streets to discover the colorful fishermen’s houses.

Type of beach

Sand or no sand?

The beach’s surface is made up of fine greyish-blond sand, typical of the Costa del Sol. The beach is divided into several artificial coves, limiting currents and making the sand a particularly pleasant place to lay your towel.

Swimming conditions and supervision

Swimming is easy and safe thanks to the piers that break the waves. It’s a beach where the water is often calmer than downtown beaches. Lifeguards are on duty during the high season (June to September), generally from 10am to 8pm.
The advantage of some parts of the beach is the shade provided by the palm trees.

Installations

Public showers and toilets are available. Please note that in times of drought, shower use may be restricted by the municipality.

Sun lounger and parasol rental areas are available, as are outdoor fitness areas along the Paseo Marítimo.

Public transport access

The bus is the most practical option. From Paseo del Parque in the center of Malaga, lines 3, 8 and 11 drop you off near Playa del Palo in less than 30min.

Cycling is also a fantastic experience! The cycle path continues past Pedregalejo and takes you all the way along the coast to El Palo in 20 from the center. It’s a flat walk, shaded in places!

Dog

Dogs are not allowed on El Palo beach. For our four-legged friends, we head a little further east to Totalán beach.

Reduced mobility access

The beach is equipped with ramps and walkways to facilitate access for people with reduced mobility. Toilets and adapted parking are also available.

With children

It’s a very family-friendly beach. The absence of large waves in the coves makes it an ideal playground. Play areas with slides and swings are also set up directly on the sand.

Naturism

Naturism is not practiced on this urban, family-friendly beach.

Eating out

Eating at El Palo is an institution. The district is packed with authentic chiringuitos where fish is the star. You can’t miss the espetos grilled on boats transformed into barbecues. Value for money is often excellent, attracting Malagasy families every weekend.

Here are a few emblematic addresses on the El Palo waterfront:

  • El Tintero Restaurant (famous for its “auction” service)
  • Chiringuito El Palo
  • Narval Restaurant
