Is Chipiona worth a visit?
Yes, if you’re in the area, Chipiona is well worth a visit. It’s a charming town known for its golden sandy beaches and its lighthouse, the highest in Spain. Strolling through the town’s narrow streets, you’ll discover the fishing tradition, the wealth of birdlife and the region’s wines. We loved its relaxed atmosphere.
It’s one of Andalucia’s most beautiful cities.
1. Chipona lighthouse

The Chipiona lighthouse, located in Punta del Perro, dominates the whole town. You can’t miss it! At 69 metres, it’s the highest lighthouse in Spain, and one of the top 10 in the world. You’ll need to climb over 300 spiral steps to reach its lantern.
Inaugurated in 1867, it helps ships avoid a dangerous reef near the mouth of the Guadalquivir. Today, it’s still in operation, but is still open to visitors (albeit on a very limited basis)! From the top of the tower, you can enjoy beautiful views over this very flat region.
But even when it’s closed, it’s impressive to see from the outside.

You can appreciate the city’s rich history, evident in its architecture, which reflects both Moorish and Baroque influences.
5. Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la O and its square

The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la O is an important historic church in the heart of Chipiona. Originally built in pure Gothic style, the church has undergone several renovations and modifications since the 16th century.

8. Castillo de Chipiona and its ‘Cádiz and the New World’ interpretation center

And, as you stroll around, you won’t be able to miss the small Castillo de Chipiona, an ancient fortress whose exact origins are unclear. The theory is that it was built in the 15th century to defend against attacks by Barbary pirates. It has been modified many times over the centuries.
You can simply walk around the outside. But since 2009, it has housed a tourist interpretation center dedicated to the historical relationship between Cadiz and the New World. Its 5 rooms are dedicated to the relationship between the province of Cádiz and the colonization of the New World: it was from here that three of Christopher Columbus’ four voyages set sail.
