Is Chipiona worth a visit?

Yes, if you’re in the area, Chipiona is well worth a visit. It’s a charming town known for its golden sandy beaches and its lighthouse, the highest in Spain. Strolling through the town’s narrow streets, you’ll discover the fishing tradition, the wealth of birdlife and the region’s wines. We loved its relaxed atmosphere.

It’s one of Andalucia’s most beautiful cities.

1. Chipona lighthouse

Chipiona lighthouse

The Chipiona lighthouse, located in Punta del Perro, dominates the whole town. You can’t miss it! At 69 metres, it’s the highest lighthouse in Spain, and one of the top 10 in the world. You’ll need to climb over 300 spiral steps to reach its lantern.

Inaugurated in 1867, it helps ships avoid a dangerous reef near the mouth of the Guadalquivir. Today, it’s still in operation, but is still open to visitors (albeit on a very limited basis)! From the top of the tower, you can enjoy beautiful views over this very flat region.

But even when it’s closed, it’s impressive to see from the outside.

2. The seafront promenade

Chipiona seafront

Chipiona’s seafront promenade is very pleasant. It showcases the town’s coastal charm, with views of the beaches, historic buildings and the ever-visible lighthouse! It connects several beaches, including Playa de Regla and Playa Cruz del Mar.
The tip of the town faces west, so it’s particularly pleasant to stroll along at sunset.
The promenade is often bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively atmosphere (even if you can’t see it in our photo above).

  • Free access
  • Floor in good condition and easy to clean

3. Regla beach / Chipiona

Regla beach / Chipiona

Chipiona is renowned for its beautiful golden beaches.
The best known is Playa de la Regla, south of the lighthouse. This is the most popular beach. It offers fine sand and ideal bathing conditions.

4. The charming alleyways of the old town

ruelle de Chipiona

Chipiona’s old town is a charming labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets, lined with white buildings of varying colors, and a few wrought-iron balconies, typical of Andalucia.
You can appreciate the city’s rich history, evident in its architecture, which reflects both Moorish and Baroque influences.

5. Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la O and its square

Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la O

The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la O is an important historic church in the heart of Chipiona. Originally built in pure Gothic style, the church has undergone several renovations and modifications since the 16th century.

Note the Gothic-style side portal with its pointed arch and the blue-tinted ornamentation at the top of the church.

Mass every weekday evening at 8:30 pm and at other times on weekends.

Santuario de Nuestra Senora de Regla: façade

The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Regla is an important religious site, built in the 14th century on the site of an ancient fortress belonging to the Ponce de León family. Over the centuries, it has undergone several renovations and modifications. Please note:

  • architecturally, a blend of fortress and religious elements.
  • the Patio del Real
  • the Patio Conventuel (Patio Mudéjar) with a cistern dating from 1460 and a Mozarabic-style window.
  • a dome decorated with latticework, flowers and angels

8. Castillo de Chipiona and its ‘Cádiz and the New World’ interpretation center

Castillo de Chipiona

And, as you stroll around, you won’t be able to miss the small Castillo de Chipiona, an ancient fortress whose exact origins are unclear. The theory is that it was built in the 15th century to defend against attacks by Barbary pirates. It has been modified many times over the centuries.

You can simply walk around the outside. But since 2009, it has housed a tourist interpretation center dedicated to the historical relationship between Cadiz and the New World. Its 5 rooms are dedicated to the relationship between the province of Cádiz and the colonization of the New World: it was from here that three of Christopher Columbus’ four voyages set sail.

  • We haven’t found an official website for information.

9. The sign of the city

Chipiona sign

For a fun photo moment, you’ll find the Chipiona town sign, along the beach south of the lighthouse.
It’s a fun sign with many colors.
Take time to look at the drawings on each letter that refer to important parts of the town.

  • Free access

10. Treat yourself to Sherry, for example

Chipiona offers a culinary scene renowned for its sherry and tapas.
For example, you can visit wineries such as Bodegas César Florido, famous for its muscat sherry.
You’ll find numerous bodegas with a relaxed atmosphere and a wide range of seafood dishes, a sign of the town’s history with fishing.

11. Fishing in Chipiona: Playa de las Canteras

Playa de las Canteras
Playa de las Canteras

Playa de las Canteras lies at the foot of the emblematic lighthouse. It’s small but more picturesque than the others. It features 3 fishing pens, a reminder of the town’s long history of fishing:

  • Corral de Pesca Nuevo
  • Corral de Pesca Cabito
  • Corral de Pesca Trapillo

It has more rocks and is less suitable for swimming, but ideal for snorkeling (outside the fishing enclosures).

12. Playa Cruz del Mar

A beautiful sandy beach, easily accessible and ideal for swimming.
A lively beach with beach bars.
