The Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park is located in the province of Almería, in southeastern Andalucia. We were captivated by this protected area, known for its pristine beaches and volcanic landscapes. It is one of the best-preserved coastal areas in the Mediterranean. To get there—and especially to explore the area—a car is essential: the villages and beaches are scattered across a vast area with limited public transportation.
Here we present all the practical options for getting to Cabo de Gata, depending on your starting point and preferences.

Where is Cabo de Gata, and a map
The Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park is located at the southeastern tip of Andalucia, in the province of Almería. This arid, volcanic region stretches along the Mediterranean coast for about 50 km, between the city of Almería in the northwest and Carboneras in the northeast. Its varied landscape—featuring steep cliffs, pebble beaches, and desert expanses—is the result of ancient volcanic activity.

By plane
There are three airports from which you can fly to Cabo de Gata. The choice depends mainly on your departure city and the available routes. In any case, you’ll need a rental car to get to the park from any of these airports.

From Almería Airport (LEI)
Almería Airport is the closest to the park: it is located about 35 km from San José, or a 45-minute drive. This is the most direct option if your departure city offers a connection. However, its network remains limited, consisting mainly of domestic flights from Madrid and Barcelona, as well as a few seasonal routes to European cities. We recommend that you check availability based on your travel dates, as the offer varies significantly depending on the season. Compare available flights.

From Malaga Airport (AGP)
Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport is by far the best-connected option from Europe. It is about a 3½-hour drive from San José on the A-7, which runs along the coast. We recommend this option to travelers who want to combine a visit to Cabo de Gata with other destinations in Andalucia: for example, you can explore Málaga or the Costa del Sol on the way there, then head to the park for the rest of your trip. From Murcia Airport (MJV)
The Murcia Region International Airport, which opened in 2019, is a little-known but practical option for traveling to Cabo de Gata from certain European cities. It is about a 2-hour drive from the park via the A-7. Ryanair operates flights there from several cities in France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. This is an option to consider if flights to Almería or Málaga don’t work for your dates. Compare available flights.

By train
You can take the train to Almería or Murcia from major Spanish cities. It is absolutely essential to rent a car to get to the park and get around once there, as public transportation is inadequate once you arrive. The Almería train station is located in the city center and offers the usual amenities.

- From Granada: about 2½ hours
- From Málaga: about 3 hours with a transfer
- From Murcia: about 3 hours and 30 minutes with a transfer
- From Barcelona: about 9 hours with a transfer

By car
A car is not only the most flexible way to get to Cabo de Gata, but also the only way that’s truly suitable for exploring the park once you’re there. The roads leading to the region are in good condition. We particularly enjoy the drive from Granada, which winds through landscapes of olive groves and arid hills before reaching the coast. Inside the park, some of the trails leading to the most secluded beaches require a rugged vehicle, although a standard vehicle is sufficient for most locations. Compare car rental offers.

- From Almería: about 40 minutes via the AL-3115
- From Murcia: about 2 hours via the A-7
- From Granada: about 2 hours and 30 minutes via the A-92 and then the A-7
- From Málaga: about 3 hours and 30 minutes via the A-7
- From Sevilla: about 4 hours via the A-92
- From Madrid: about 6 hours via the A-4 and then the A-7
By bus
Intercity buses connect Almería to some of the villages in the park, such as San José, but service is infrequent, especially during the off-season. We consider this option a useful way to reach Almería from major cities, but not sufficient for exploring the park on your own. Once you’re in Almería, you’ll still need a rental car to visit the beaches and more remote attractions.

Day trip from Almería
Almería is about 30 minutes from the park and is a good base for organizing day trips. If you don’t want to drive or would like to explore the park on a guided tour, there are several options available from the city. We believe these options are particularly well-suited for travelers staying in Almería who want to explore the park without the hassle of off-road driving.

The Tabernas Desert, just a stone’s throw from the park
Around 45 minutes north of Almería, the Tabernas desert is the only desert in the strict sense of the word in Europe. Located very close to Cabo de Gata, it makes for a great nature excursion to combine with a visit to the park. This barren, moon-like landscape served as the backdrop for many Hollywood Westerns in the 1960s and 1970s. There are plenty of things to do there: horseback riding in the badlands, motorcycle tours, a visit to the Oasys MiniHollywood movie studios with their Western shows, or exploring the desert in a 4WD. And once you’re in Cabo de Gata…
Once you’re in the park, a car is still essential for getting between the various sites. We recommend starting in the northern part of the park and gradually working your way south, stopping at Playa de los Muertos, Playazo de Rodalquilar, La Isleta del Moro, and then the beaches of Los Genoveses and Mónsul.
