Where to take your car?
If you’re arriving by plane and want to start your road trip straight away, we advise you to collect your vehicle from the airport. Getting to grips with a car on the fast lanes leading out of town is much simpler than navigating the often narrow and congested streets of the historic center from the outset.
On the other hand, if you’re starting your stay with a few days in the city, there’s no need to rent a car before setting off on your excursions. Sevilla is very easy to get around on foot, and parking in the center is hard to come by. In this case, we recommend that you collect the vehicle when you leave the city. When to rent a car
Sevilla attracts many visitors throughout the year, especially around Semana Santa and Feria de Abril, two periods when demand for rentals explodes. We advise you to book as soon as your dates are fixed: rates rise quickly and available vehicles become scarce. In summer, it’s almost impossible to find an attractive last-minute offer.

2. Which car rental for Sevilla?
Our three main criteria for choosing your vehicle:
- Not too wide
- A sufficiently powerful engine
- Automatic if possible, but manual cars are still in the majority in Europe
What size car?
Avoid bulky vehicles. The center of Sevilla has many narrow streets and traffic-restricted areas. On the other hand, if you plan to venture into the white villages of the Sierra Norte or Sierra de Aracena, village crossings can be very tight. We prefer the mini, economy or compact categories, which are well suited to these conditions.
Which engine?
Most of the Sevilla region is flat, especially towards Cadiz and Huelva. All engines are therefore suitable for most journeys. On the other hand, if you’re planning to reach Ronda or the villages of the Sierra de Grazalema, we’d advise you to avoid the smaller bikes for greater comfort on hills.
Automatic or manual?
As elsewhere in Europe, automatic cars are available in smaller numbers than manuals, and are often more expensive. We recommend that you book early if automatic transmission is essential for you. On DiscoverCars, the “Automatic transmission” filter in the left-hand column makes selection easier.
3. Permits, rules and credit cards
Minimum age
The legal driving age in Spain is 18. However, the vast majority of rental agencies in Sevilla apply their own conditions:
- Over 21 years of age
- Have held your licence for at least one year
- Additional charges apply for drivers under 25 years of age.
Do I need an international permit?
For short-term stays, your national permit will suffice in most cases, provided it meets these criteria:
- A license number
- A photograph
- A validity date
- Writing in Latin characters
European, American, Canadian and Australian licenses are accepted without restriction. For permits written in other alphabets, we recommend an official translation or an international permit.
Do I need a credit card?
The answer depends on the type of insurance you choose. If you don’t take the rental company’s zero deductible option, they will require a credit card deposit. Some agencies refuse debit cards for this operation. If you opt for insurance that fully covers the deductible, a debit card may suffice. We advise you to check this point at the time of booking.

4. Insurance
Compulsory insurance
Unlimited liability insurance is compulsory in Spain. It is automatically included in the price of all car rentals, without exception.
Supplements
For the rest, the choice depends on your risk tolerance and your budget. The Sevilla region is not particularly dangerous on the roads: the main arteries are well-maintained and unpaved roads are rare, except for access to a few isolated beaches towards Huelva. We have identified three main options.
Option 1
Your personal insurance (car or home) sometimes covers car rentals abroad. Read the terms and conditions carefully before you leave: this type of cover is rare.
Option 2
Take out the insurance offered by the booking platform. This is the option we’ve been using since we started booking with DiscoverCars. Its rates are lower than those of the rental company. The disadvantage: you have to leave a security deposit when you pick up the vehicle, and pay the amount in advance in the event of damage, before being reimbursed. We’ve had to claim this insurance twice. In both cases, reimbursement was made without difficulty within 7 days.
Option 3
Take out the additional insurance directly with the rental company. It’s the most expensive solution, but also the simplest in the event of a problem: no advance fees, no paperwork.
5. Access to rental cars
At Sevilla San Pablo Airport, all rental outlets are located in the arrivals hall on the main terminal level. Vehicles are parked in dedicated parking lots, accessible on foot or by shuttle bus depending on the branch. We found the airport organization clear and well signposted on arrival.
In the city center, there are several branches with cash points near the Santa Justa train station and in the Centro district. If you’re picking up the car in town rather than at the airport, allow a little more time to locate the agency and drive out of the center.
6. Check your vehicle at pick-up
Checking the car
If you have subscribed to the rental company’s complementary service to reduce the excess to zero, the check is not essential, but we still recommend that you check that the safety equipment is present in the vehicle.
In all other cases, we advise you to take a complete tour of the car before you leave, photograph any existing damage and report it to the agency if it is not already noted on the pick-up document. Please note the following points:
- Fuel level and mileage, to be checked against rental file
- All exterior bodywork: dents, scratches, chips
- The roof, often forgotten, but checked on the return journey
- The underside of bumpers
- Rear-view mirrors
- The interior
- Tire condition
- Wheel arches
- Spare wheel, if fitted
Mandatory in-car equipment
In Spain, the following regulatory equipment must be present in the vehicle:
- 2 warning triangles or roof beacons (mandatory)
- Reflective vest (mandatory)
- Spare wheel and tools (mandatory)
- First-aid kit (recommended, optional)
- Flashlight (recommended, optional)
- Fire extinguisher (recommended, optional)

Spain has toll motorway sections. Payment is made in cash or by credit card directly at the kiosks: no badge or rental sticker is required. You generally take a ticket at the entrance to the freeway and pay the amount at the exit. We advise you to keep a few coins and banknotes handy for the manual payment booths.

7. Getting ready to drive in Sevilla and Andalucia
Driving in and around Sevilla presents no particular difficulties, with the exception of the historic center, where traffic is dense and parking complex. We recommend parking on the outskirts of the center and continuing on foot. See our full article on driving in Andalucia.

- Speed limits: 50km/h in towns (often less in calmer areas), 60 to 90km/h on other roads, 120km/h on freeways.
- Permitted blood alcohol level: 0.05%.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to rent a car in Sevilla?
If you’re only staying in the historic center, we don’t recommend renting a car: traffic is congested and parking spaces are scarce. On the other hand, if you want to explore the white villages, natural parks or Atlantic beaches, a car is essential. We consider it to be the most useful travel tool for getting the most out of the Seville region.
Is it worth having a 4WD?
No, in the vast majority of cases. The roads around Sevilla are well-maintained and a standard vehicle is more than sufficient. A 4WD can only be useful if you plan to venture onto unpaved trails in the Sierra Norte, but this is the exception.
What to do if you are fined
You are responsible for any fines incurred during the rental period. It can take up to 3 months for the fine to be passed on to the rental company. The company will then pass this on to you, often with additional administrative charges.
What should I do if my vehicle breaks down or has a problem?
Keep your rental contract throughout your stay. It indicates the rental company’s assistance number, to be contacted in the event of a breakdown. Most agencies offer a 24-hour assistance service. We recommend that you make a separate note of this number when you pick up your vehicle, so that you are not dependent on the paper document in an emergency.
