Why visit the Royal Stables?

Are the stables worth it? Our opinion:

Yes, the Royal Stables are well worth a visit. In fact, it’s one of the best things to do in Cordoba! This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a unique place where history and equestrian tradition meet. We were fascinated by the remarkable architecture and the opportunity to see the famous Andalucia horses. The equestrian show is particularly impressive, allowing you to admire the grace of these magnificent animals.

Why are the Royal Stables so famous?

The Royal Stables of Cordoba are famous for being the birthplace of the Andalusian horse. Founded in 1570 by Philip II, we learned that they were created with the aim of developing a new breed of horse, strong and agile: the “purebred Spanish”.
The Cordovan stables are also renowned for their permanent equestrian show , which combines Flamenco dance and dressage.
In 1929, the site was declared a National Historic Monument, and in 1994 was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

History in brief

The Royal Stables of Cordoba have a rich history spanning several centuries. We learned that their construction began in 1570 on the orders of King Philip II, who wanted to create a place dedicated to breeding a new breed of horse. The site’s exceptional value was recognized in 1929 when it was classified as a National Historic Monument. Then, in 1994, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the historic center of Cordoba, thus confirming its cultural and historical importance.

Best time to visit

In our opinion, spring and autumn are the ideal times to discover the city and its monuments at your leisure, and avoid the heat of summer. We also recommend that you visit the Royal Stables when the riders are training, to see the horses at work and appreciate their majesty. If you’re attending a horse show in winter, you’ll want to opt for the “premium” seats, which are heated.
We recommend avoiding the high season (July and August) to visit Cordoba. The city may be subject to overcrowding during this period.

Length of visit and main difficulties

Allow between 30min and 1h depending on how much time you want to spend admiring the details. Allow around 2 hours on site if you wish to visit and watch the horse show, which lasts 1 hour 10 minutes.
The site is accessible to people with reduced mobility, with adapted toilets. If you are in a wheelchair and wish to attend the show, we recommend that you indicate this when booking to ensure a comfortable seat.

Diving into the history of Cordoba’s Royal Stables

Royal Stables of Cordoba - History

A visit to Cordoba’s Royal Stables reveals a rich architectural and cultural history. Built in 1570 on the site of former stables from the Caliphate era, we loved their architecture, the fruit of Mudejar, Christian and Hispano-Moorish influences. We also learned that the site was rebuilt after a fire in 1734. It’s fortunate that this Renaissance gem has been preserved! During your visit, take time to observe the majestic vaults and sandstone columns that define the stalls. They bear witness to the glorious period during which this historic site was built.

Royal Stables of Cordoba - History

The tour is divided into 4 distinct parts, allowing you to immerse yourself in the history of the site:

  • the central courtyard, where performances take place,
  • the stables where the magnificent horses live
  • the main building, with its impressive architecture (vaulted ceilings, sandstone columns) housing former horse stalls and carriages.
  • the saddlery, which perfectly completes this immersion in the equestrian world.

Ecuries Royales de Cordoue - Andalusian horses

Andalucia horses are the real stars of these historic stables! We loved their elegance and natural presence. Created at the instigation of King Philip II, this breed is the fruit of rigorous selection aimed at developing a horse that is both strong and agile. Did you know that the Andalusian horse, also known as the purebred Spanish horse, possesses exceptional qualities that make it one of the most prized breeds in the world?

As you stroll through the stables, we invite you to observe these noble animals while respecting their tranquillity: avoid sudden gestures and behaviour that could stress them. Even through the stalls’ partitions, we enjoyed admiring the beautiful dresses of these Spanish thoroughbreds.

Royal Stables of Cordoba - Equestrian show

The equestrian show at the Écuries Royales is a truly exceptional experience. We were captivated by the perfect harmony between the Andalucia horses and their riders. You’ll be treated to acts that skilfully blend Flamenco dance with equestrian exercises, all accompanied by traditional music specially prepared for the occasion.
