October is one of our favorite months to visit Andalucia. The summer heat has subsided, and temperatures are mild and pleasant, ranging from 22°C to 26°C inland during the day, while the autumn light takes on a warm, golden quality that can’t be found at any other time of year. Tourist traffic is significantly lower than in the summer: heritage sites can be visited under ideal conditions, accommodations are more affordable, and towns return to their normal pace of life. The sea will still be warm enough for swimming at the beginning of the month on the Costa del Sol. On the other hand, the chance of showers is higher than in the summer: a few rainy days are possible, especially in the second half of the month. October is especially recommended for those interested in cultural heritage, hiking, and wine tourism. This is also the time of year for major fairs and festivals, which mark the end of the tourist season.

Traveling in Andalucia in October: A Summary of Conditions
Temperatures
The temperatures are mild and very pleasant for outdoor activities. Along the coast, temperatures range from 21°C to 24°C (70°F to 75°F) during the day. Inland, Sevilla and Córdoba see daytime temperatures ranging from 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F) depending on the week, with cool nights around 12°C to 14°C. Grenada enjoys daytime temperatures of 19°C to 22°C (66°F to 72°F), with cooler nights around 9°C to 11°C, so be sure to pack a jacket for the evenings.
Water temperatures
The sea remains pleasant at the beginning of the month on the Costa del Sol, with temperatures ranging from 21°C to 23°C (70°F to 73°F). Swimming is still possible during the first half of the month for most visitors. By the end of the month, the water starts to get cooler, and swimming is usually reserved for the bravest. On the Atlantic side, near Cádiz, temperatures are slightly lower, around 20°C to 21°C.
Crowds and prizes
October is considered the low season for tourism, with the exception of the week of the Feria de Jerez and a few Spanish public holidays. Sites likethe Alhambra in Granada still require advance booking, but there are far more time slots available than in the summer. Accommodation rates are significantly lower than during the high season, especially along the coast. Overall, it’s one of the most accessible months of the year.

Opening conditions
All attractions, museums, and monuments operate as usual in October, following their fall hours, which are generally from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Some sites adjust their hours during the summer: be sure to check the specific hours before your visit. The beach bars are gradually closing down over the course of the month. Restaurants and bars in town are operating as usual, serving dinner starting at 9 p.m., although the outdoor seating areas clear out a little earlier than in the summer due to the cooler evenings.
Length of day
The average length of daylight is 11 hours and 30 minutes, decreasing from 12 hours at the beginning of the month to 10 hours and 45 minutes by the end of October, when the clocks are set back for standard time on the last Sunday in October. This time change causes sunset to occur much later: keep this in mind when planning the final days of your trip.

October is one of the best months to explore Andalusia’s cultural heritage at your own pace. We particularly enjoyed that month:
- The Alhambra in Granada, a 14th-century Nasrid masterpiece, bathed in exceptional autumn light
- The Mezquita-Cathedral of Córdoba and its courtyard with orange trees heavy with fruit
- Sevilla’s Cathedral and Alcázar, with a very comfortable visiting experience
- White villages like Ronda or Arcos de la Frontera, free of crowds and bathed in golden light

Weather in Andalucia in October – what to expect
The Andalusian climate in October is that of a mild and sunny autumn, quite different from the gray autumns of Northern Europe. The summer heat has subsided, but the sun is still out most of the time. The days are filled with warm, golden light, making them particularly ideal for sightseeing. Showers are possible, especially in the second half of the month, but they are generally not as persistent as winter rains. In October, we enjoyed the freedom to visit at any time: without the heat of summer, afternoons are once again perfect for visiting outdoor sites.
On the coast
In October, the Costa del Sol and the Costa de la Luz offer very pleasant conditions for walks and coastal excursions. Temperatures will range between 21°C and 24°C during the day, and the sea breeze will remain light. The beaches are almost deserted during the week, allowing you to enjoy them in a rare sense of tranquility. We particularly enjoyed walking along Málaga’s waterfront and strolling through the narrow streets of the old town in October: the low afternoon light and the lack of crowds create an atmosphere that’s very different from summer. Swimming is still possible during the first half of the month for most visitors.
Inland
In October, inland cities such as Sevilla, Córdoba, and Granada enjoy their most pleasant weather since spring. Afternoon temperatures range from 22°C to 26°C, making it possible to explore freely at any time of day without having to seek out the shade. Mornings are cool and invigorating, perfect for exploring historic districts on foot. Nights in Granada, with temperatures ranging from 9°C to 11°C, call for a light jacket. In the streets of Sevilla and Córdoba, the orange trees are beginning to bear fruit, their color contrasting with the ochre-colored facades in the late afternoon light. We found October to be a particularly good time to explore neighborhoods off the beaten path.
In the mountains
In October, the Alpujarras and the Sierra de Cazorla, Segura y las Villas Natural Park offer the best hiking conditions of the fall. Temperatures at higher elevations range from 14°C to 20°C during the day, depending on the altitude, making for a very pleasant walk even in the middle of the afternoon. The oak and pine forests of the Sierra de Cazorla are beginning to take on their autumn colors, with golden and reddish hues transforming the landscape. The slopes of the Alpujarras are once again covered in lush, green vegetation after the first rains. The trails remain easily passable, although some areas may be muddy after rain showers. A lightweight waterproof jacket is recommended for hiking days.

Rain and Wind
October marks the return of the rains in Andalucia after the long summer drought. Rainfall will increase significantly compared to September, especially in the second half of the month. Rainfall comes in two forms: brief, intense thunderstorms at the beginning of the month, a holdover from the Mediterranean summer, and gentler, steady rain associated with the first Atlantic weather systems at the end of the month. This rainfall is generally beneficial for vegetation and does not usually last for several days in a row. We had a few days of steady rain in October, but they were few and far between.

There is still no snow at all in October in the cities and along the coast. The highest peaks of the Sierra Nevada, above 2,800 meters, may see the season’s first snowfall at the very end of the month during the coldest spells, without affecting travel in the region.
The Levante wind drops significantly in intensity in October on the Costa del Sol. The prevailing winds are gradually shifting toward the west and southwest, bringing the first Atlantic weather systems. Inland, conditions are generally calm. On the Costa de la Luz, the winds have died down compared to the summer, although Tarifa still offers good conditions for board sports at the beginning of the month.
Sunshine
In October, daylight hours range from 12:00 p.m. to 10:45 a.m., with the switch to standard time at the end of the month.
Sunrise is around 8:00 a.m. and sunset is around 7:00 p.m. at the end of the month.
There was still plenty of sunshine in October: we averaged 6 to 7 hours of sunshine per day, with some very bright days in between the rainy spells. The autumn light is one of the most underrated highlights of a trip to Andalucia at this time of year: low on the horizon, warm, and golden in the late afternoon, it highlights the monuments with a special intensity. The ochre facades of Sevilla, the walls of the Alhambra, and the white-washed streets of the villages take on hues that are not seen in either summer or spring. This is the perfect time for photography enthusiasts.
With the sun setting earlier, it’s important to plan ahead for the end of the day: by the end of the month, the sun sets as early as 7 p.m., which means that hikes and visits to outdoor sites should be scheduled for the morning and early afternoon. After the time change, the sun sets even earlier. Take this opportunity to enjoy evenings at the tapas bars and restaurants in the historic center, which come alive well before dinner time in the summer.
Water temperature – swimming in Andalucia in October
Swimming is still possible in early October on the Costa del Sol, thanks to the thermal inertia accumulated over the summer. The sea remains calm for most visitors during the first half of the month. On the other hand, temperatures gradually drop in the second half of the month, and swimming becomes less popular, reserved for those who are used to cooler waters. Hotel heated pools are a great way to enjoy the water in comfort during October.

Crowds and other conditions
October is one of the best months to visit Andalucia from a practical standpoint. Visitor numbers are low throughout almost the entire region, with the exception of a few Spanish public holidays—notably October 12, Día de la Hispanidad—which bring a local influx of Spanish visitors. Outside of these peak times, the historic districts return to a pleasant, everyday rhythm: residents reclaim their cities, neighborhood markets bustle with activity once again, and tapas bars are frequented by locals and visitors alike. We found October to be the perfect time to immerse ourselves in everyday life in Andalucia.
A few practical tips: Some coastal establishments close in the second half of October or shorten their hours, particularly on beaches and in the most seasonal beach resorts. Inland cities, on the other hand, are continuing to operate as usual. Dinners are still served late, in keeping with local custom—rarely before 9 p.m.—but the outdoor seating areas clear out earlier as the evenings cool off. The time change at the end of the month alters daily routines: the sun sets between 6:30 and 7:00 p.m., which shifts the time for an aperitif on the terrace to around 5:30 p.m. rather than 7:00 p.m. as in the summer.
Nature and Landscapes in October
October is the month when Andalucia regains its colors after the dryness of summer. The first rains bring the vegetation back to life: the dry grasses of the plains gradually give way to a soft green, the rivers begin to flow more freely, and the countryside is transformed. In the oak and chestnut forests of the Sierra de Cazorla and the Sierra Nevada, the autumn colors gradually come into full view throughout the month. This is one of the best times of year for hikers in these mountain ranges. The vineyards around Jerez and Montilla-Moriles are in the midst of the winemaking process: the scent of fermenting must fills the streets of the wine-growing villages at the beginning of the month.
The autumn bird migration is in full swing in October in Doñana Natural Park and the Strait of Gibraltar. Tens of thousands of birds of prey, storks, and songbirds cross the strait on their way to Africa: the Tarifa headland is one of Europe’s most renowned birdwatching spots during this time of year. The Andalucian coast is also home to marine species that are rarely seen during the rest of the year. Whale-watching trips from Tarifa remain a great option early in the month for spotting dolphins and passing large cetaceans.
Events in October in Andalucia
- Sevilla Flamenco Biennial (continued, even-numbered years): This leading biennial festival, one of the most important in the world, continues into October after beginning in September in even-numbered years. Singing, dancing, and flamenco guitar performances are held in theaters and historic venues throughout Sevilla, featuring a lineup of the most renowned artists on the international flamenco scene. If your visit happens to fall in an even-numbered year, it’s a rare opportunity not to be missed.
- Hispanic Heritage Day (October 12): Spain’s national holiday, which commemorates Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas in 1492, is celebrated throughout Andalucia with military parades, concerts, and cultural events. In Sevilla, the city from which many expeditions set sail for the New World, the day is particularly significant. Museums and monuments may have special hours on that day.
- Jerez Jazz Festival: This jazz festival, held every October in Jerez de la Frontera, features a lineup of Spanish and international artists performing in intimate venues throughout the historic center. The blend of musical styles—jazz, flamenco, and Latin music—feels particularly natural and original here.
- Sevilla Film Festival: Founded in 2004, this European film festival has become one of Spain’s most important film events. It takes place every fall in Sevilla and features a selection of European films in preview screenings, retrospectives, and meetings with filmmakers. It is a major cultural event for movie lovers visiting the capital of Andalucia.
- Chestnut Festival (Magosto): Starting in mid-October, many villages in the mountainous regions of Andalucia host chestnut festivals featuring outdoor roasts, music, and craft markets. The Sierra de Aracena, in the province of Huelva, is particularly famous for its chestnut groves and its autumn festivals.

As everywhere, prices vary depending on what you are looking for. Accommodation ranges from youth hostels to 5-star hotels. It is therefore difficult to give a budget. In October, rates are significantly lower than during the peak summer season, especially for accommodations by the sea and in historic districts. The weekends around October 12 and Spanish long weekends may cause localized and temporary price increases. Outside of these peak periods, October offers one of the best values of the year: affordable accommodations, less crowded attractions, and weather that’s still very pleasant. This is a particularly good time of year for budget-conscious travelers.
