Travelling to Andalucia in May: quick answers
Is the weather fine in Andalucia in May? Is this a good time to visit?
In our opinion, May is a very pleasant month to visit Andalucia. Spring is at its peak. Temperatures reach 25°C to 28°C inland at the end of the month, and Cordoba’s gardens and patios are in full bloom. It’s also the month of the Festival of the Patios of Cordoba, a Unesco intangible heritage site, and the Feria de Jerez, two events that are well worth a visit. The days exceed 14 hours of daylight at the end of the month. On the other hand, tourist numbers are up sharply. We recommend that you book your tickets for the Alhambra if you’re visiting Granada, and accommodation several weeks in advance. The evenings remain mild, inviting us to extend our terrace dinners until late, according to local tradition.

Travelling to Andalucia in May: summary of conditions
Temperatures
Temperatures are pleasant and rising throughout the month. On the coast, the thermometer reads between 22°C and 25°C (72°F and 77°F) during the day. Inland, Sevilla and Cordoba reach 25°C to 30°C in the afternoon in the second half of the year. Nights are also getting warmer: expect 14°C to 17°C depending on the town. The Sierra Nevada still retains a few patches of snow on its highest peaks at the start of the month.
Water temperatures
In May, the Mediterranean Sea registers between 18°C and 20°C (64°F and 68°F) on the Costa del Sol. On the Atlantic side, towards Cadiz, temperatures remain slightly cooler. For most visitors, swimming becomes a real possibility, especially at the end of the month, even if summer waters have not yet been reached.
Crowds and prizes
May saw a surge in tourist numbers, but without reaching the levels of July and August. Major sites such asGranada’s Alhambra and Sevilla’s cathedral are often fully booked several weeks in advance. Accommodation rates are significantly higher than in spring, but still lower than in summer. We advise you to book your entire stay as soon as possible.

Climate in Andalucia in May – weather forecast
The climate in Andalusia in May is that of an advanced spring that gradually turns to summer. The heat settles inland as the month progresses, while the coast enjoys a pleasant, constant mildness. Most days are sunny, although a few brief showers are possible at the beginning of the month. We were struck by the richness of the vegetation in May. The countryside is still green, the flowers are in full bloom and the scent of orange blossom permeates the streets of the big cities.
On the coast
The Costa del Sol and Costa de la Luz enjoy very pleasant conditions in May. The thermometer regularly reaches 23°C to 25°C during the day. The sea breeze softens the afternoons and makes coastal walks particularly comfortable. We were able to take full advantage of the terraces and beaches, without the intense heat that characterizes summer. The waters are gradually warming up, and swimming is possible from the second half of the year. The seaside resorts are active but not yet saturated.
Inland
Inland cities such as Sevilla, Cordoba and Granada experience increasing heat in May, especially in the second half of the year. Afternoons in Sevilla and Cordoba can exceed 28°C to 30°C at the end of the month: it is advisable to plan visits in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the hottest hours. On the other hand, mornings and evenings remain delightful. In May, the flowering Cordovan patios and gardens of Sevilla’sAlcázar put on their most generous show of the year.
In the mountains
The Sierra Nevada lost most of its snow cover in May, with the exception of the highest ridges above 3000m. The ski season ended a few weeks ago. On the other hand, the intermediate slopes and villages of the Alpujarras are covered with dense vegetation: cherry trees are in fruit, broom flowers are in abundance and hiking trails are in excellent condition. Temperatures at altitude remain cool and pleasant, making May one of the best months for hikers. It takes less than 1 hour from Granada to reach the Alpujarras.

Rain and Wind
May is one of the driest months of the year in Andalucia. Precipitation is still down on April and is now rare, especially in the second half of the year. The few showers possible at the start of the month generally take the form of short, intense showers, followed by rapid clearing. We’ve rarely seen a completely rainy day in May: once the downpour has passed, the sky almost always clears.
- Rainfall in Sevilla: 20 to 35 mm
(2 to 3 days on average) - Rainfall in Málaga: 20 to 30 mm
(2 to 3 days on average) - Rainfall in Granada: 25 to 40 mm
(over 3 days on average)
Snow is totally absent from the plains and cities in May. Even on the Sierra Nevada, it is confined to ridges above 2800m, with no impact on travel in the region.
The wind is moderate in May. The levante, a dry, warm easterly wind, can occasionally blow on the Costa del Sol and Costa de la Luz, sometimes for two or three consecutive days. Inland, conditions are generally calm. These windy episodes remain a minority and do not prevent outdoor activities.
Sunshine
In May, daylight hours vary from 1.45pm to 2.30pm.
Sunrise is around 7:00 am and sunset around 9:15 pm at the end of the month.
Sunshine is excellent in May: we counted an average of 9 to 10 hours of sunshine a day. This is one of the best months of the year to enjoy the Andalucia light, still soft in the morning and generous throughout the day. The Costa del Sol and the major inland cities enjoy largely clear skies. The warm, low-angled light of the late afternoon is particularly sublime for monuments: it’s the perfect time to wander through the narrow streets of Granada’s Albaicín or along the banks of Sevilla’s Guadalquivir.
Long, bright evenings allow us to organize complete programs without rushing. After cultural visits in the morning, afternoons are ideal for coastal walks or hikes in natural areas. On the other hand, it’s advisable to avoid going out in the sun between 1pm and 4pm, especially in inland towns where the heat can become intense at the end of the month.
Water temperature – swimming in Andalucia in May
May marks a turning point for bathing in Andalucia. The sea is gradually warming up and temperatures are becoming comfortable for most bathers, especially in the second half of the year on the Costa del Sol. On the Atlantic side, the waters remain a little cooler, but the beaches of Cadiz and Bolonia are also beginning to attract surfing and lounging enthusiasts. Hotel swimming pools are usually open and well frequented from the beginning of the month.
- Water temperature in Málaga: 19°C (66°F) on average
- Water temperature in Marbella: 19°C (66°F) on average
- Average water temperature in Cadiz: 18°C (64°F)
Crowds and other conditions
May presents a balance that we find particularly favorable: the number of visitors is higher than in spring, but the sites remain accessible without the overcrowding of summer. The historic centers of Sevilla, Cordoba and Granada are lively without being overcrowded, and you can still enjoy the restaurants and tapas bars without waiting endlessly. We did, however, recommend booking the Alhambra when planning your trip: tour slots fill up very quickly in May, sometimes two or three weeks in advance.
A few practical points to bear in mind: dinner rarely starts before 9pm, and the terraces stay lively until midnight, which makes for a pleasant evening shift for visitors used to earlier hours. Many museums and monuments take a break between 2pm and 4pm. In addition, the Feria de Jerez processions and the Festival des Patios in Cordoba mobilize entire neighborhoods and can disrupt traffic. Find out the exact dates of these events before planning your visit.
Flowers and nature in May
Andalucia’s natural environment is remarkably generous in May. The countryside is still bright green before the heat of summer: fields of sunflowers are beginning to bloom on the plains of Sevilla and Cordoba, creating intense yellows that contrast with the white of the hilltop villages. In cities, bougainvilleas and plumbagos take over from blooming orange trees to color facades and patios. We particularly enjoyed the mornings in the gardens of Sevilla’s Real Alcázar, where the roses and jasmines are in full bloom.
It’s also the highlight of Cordoba’s Patios Festival, when dozens of houses in the San Basilio district and the old town open their inner courtyards to the public. These patios, covered with geraniums, roses and clematis in carefully orchestrated compositions, have been listed as a Unesco intangible heritage site since 2012. For Doñana Nature Park, May marks the end of the great spring migration: hundreds of species of birds are still stopping off in its wetlands before continuing northwards. It’s one of Europe’s most important bird shows.
May events in Andalucia
- Festival des Patios de Cordoue (Concurso de Patios): this Unesco intangible heritage event is held every year in May. Dozens of homeowners open up their courtyards and decorate them with flowers in a competition that’s as popular as it is friendly. The most award-winning patios are accessible free of charge. This is one of the most unique experiences Andalucia has to offer in May. Plan to visit early in the morning to avoid the crowds.
- Feria de Jerez (Feria del Caballo): the great fair of Jerez de la Frontera, usually held between late April and early May, celebrates the city’s long equestrian tradition. This is one of Spain’s most important fairs for equestrian enthusiasts: dressage competitions for purebred Spanish horses (PRE), exhibitions and entertainment in traditional dress enliven the town for an entire week. The atmosphere is very different from Sevilla’s Feria de Abril, which is more local and focused on horse culture.
- Cruces de Mayo in Cordoba: a few days before the Patios Festival, the May Crosses bloom in the streets and squares of Cordoba. Monumental crosses covered with flowers are erected in several parts of the city, accompanied by musical entertainment and local wine tastings. It’s a very popular neighborhood party, accessible to all.
- Noche en Blanco de Málaga: this cultural night, held in May in several districts of Málaga, features art installations, open-air concerts and exceptional late-night museum openings. The city’s museums, including the Musée Picasso, regularly take part in the event.
- Fiestas de San Isidro in the villages: around May 15, many Andalucia villages celebrate their patron saint with romeries (country processions), dances and craft markets. These local festivals, less well known to foreign visitors, offer an authentic insight into Andalucia’s social life.
It’s time to book!
Compare everything: airlines, prices, schedules, and availability.
May prices
As everywhere, prices vary depending on what you are looking for. Accommodation ranges from youth hostels to 5-star hotels. It is therefore difficult to give a budget. In May, rates are significantly higher than in winter or early spring, but do not reach the peaks of July and August. Long weekends and Spanish public holidays (such as Labor Day on May 1) can cause occasional surges and last-minute booking difficulties. Outside these niches, value for money remains favorable, especially for accommodation outside the historic centers.
